I am looking to replace one Penn downrigger. On the good side - I think that I should be good with the fish gods for awhile as I have given my share of fishing equipment & tackle to last me quite a bit.

I too have splashed a penn 600. Off of edmonds probably 8-10 years ago. I cried. I have now put metal retainers with clips on mine. Take about 4 feet of cable, put this on a brass snap clip. the other end is a brass ring, which i fit around the gold bar. You have to take off the pulley assembly to fit the ring over, then clip it to your belt or around a cleat, whatever. I had a nother one pop off by dropping the weight or stopping it too fast. Check yer plates and make sure they are not loose.
