Oregon birders, yes birders!, are angry. Malhuer wildlife refuge is one of the best bird watching locations in the country, attracting birders from all over who visit the area, bringing a lot of business to this very rural area. And the birders want their refuge back! Watch out white militia! These birders are sneaky and stealthy, dressed in their bird watching camo, able to subsist on nuts, berries, and granola bars, standing in the cold for hours at a time to catch a glimpse of some uncommon bird species. And the militia better not call them "bird watchers" either. These hard core birders don't appreciate that term, and are very likely to use their large caliber spotting scopes to whack some sense into any militia man who gets in the way of the birders' avocation.

The militia has been warned!!

thats because in 1909 Roosevelt declared the area in question a reservation, even when zero natives lived on it.... shortly after he designated it a refuge....

What do you mean when you state that it was theirs?
Did they actually live there?
If so, how did they come in possession of it?
And just what were the boundaries of their land?
Are you sure that the land in question wasn't either occupied by, or traditionally frequented by the Washoe or the Shoshone.

Anyone who knows much about native American history realizes that many tribes were in a almost constant state of war with some other tribe, and many were more than pleased to kill each other, take the others as slaves and occupy or use the territory that the vanquished had been using.

My point is that the claim of ownership to the Malhuer National Wildlife Refuge by the 349 Burns Paiute's, a tribe that was first federally recognized in 1968 is unsubstantial.

Owning land is a recent construct.

The refuge is a refuge in that arid climate because of the work the initial ranchers did, as well as subsequent ranchers. It only exists because of the irrigation they installed and the meadows that created.

So you can read, that's great, then read this.
