Anyone headed down to hit those monster CNR Kings on the Humps in a few weeks? or strictly going after Silvers down there. Last year this fishery was spectacular. 30# fish were common place.
How about area 9 this week? anyone doing well there? I've heard alot of hit and miss reports on the incoming Coho.
The Carbon River has produced some nice fish when the river has been in shape. The locals down there say that the best day so far was about 45 fish. I fished there and it was slow when I went on monday - that was the day after the 45 fish. I saw 3 fish, 1 Silver and the 2 Kings I hit. and the water was up. Any news on that since Monday?
How about the sky? Little fishing pressure, and lots of fish it what I've heard. Wallace flats area for Silvers and Steelies below Sultan.
Don't forget the Samish. Anyone fishing up there?
Any and all info appreciated.

I think it was closed to Kings last year also...correct me if I am wrong. Lower Chehalis just now starting to see some decent King action...

SATSOP RIVER AND EAST FORK(Grays Harbor Co.) from mouth to bridge at Schafer State Park SALMON Oct. 1-Nov. 15 SALMON - no more than 2 adults. No more than 1 wild adult COHO and 1 adult CHINOOK. Please check the regs, I believe there is a min. size, etc. http://www.wa.gov/wdfw/fish/regs/2000/2000fish.pdf [This message has been edited by Kev (edited 09-14-2000).]

The Hump is not open for Kings which means they should not be targeted for C&R purposes. It is closed because of the lack of fish to support a harvastable Fishery. Mortality rates are very high on kings which does not make them a good C&R Fish. If your not there to target Hatchery Silvers go someplace else. The more people go there with the intentions of C&R king fishing the faster the river will get closed down to all Fishing.

How come the Quanalts can net the river for kings but its closed for us? Talk to a guy netting steelies last year said he did great on kings but it was closed for sports fishing??? Don't get me wrong but it seems like we pay for most of those fish(hatchery) but aren't able to fish for them? Is next year the first year that hatchery Kings are marked? Just seems kinda wierd.

CNR means catch and release. And yes while fishing for silvers your going to hit kings. Thats commonplace on the Hump.

previous note was for skunkmaster and jg. I was just trying to be upbeat and ask whats up for this weekend, didnt need the lecture on CNR and high king mortality.
I didnt make the king bite my line. And if I get one on, then I'm very good about how I handle releasing them.

Targetting chinook on the Hump for CNR fishing, while it is closed, is a very interesting topic. As I recall the latest issue of Fishing and Hunting News boldly states that Hump Chinook would be the main targets for many anglers. Also, a few years back the cover story for STS had guide, Chris Olsen, Dave Vedder and others fishing for Hump chinook after an emergency closure had been instituted that season. Hmmm???

In answer to your question about Area 9. Yes, it has been good. We went last evening and brought in three nice silvers. Lost two beauties right at the side that were even bigger yet. Last day is today so get out to Picnic Point and hug the line at the shipwreck about a quarter mile south. Fish at 90 feet.

8 Foot Leader,
In the 6-10 trips I took to the Hump last year targeting Coho we either limited out on Hatchery Coho or came close. During that time not one king was even Incidently caught. Incidental catches are very rare if your targeting Coho and fishing coho water. And if I look back at your original post you said "last year was spectacular 30# fish were common place". Wow thats pretty good for not targeting them.

I always find it hard to believe someone fishing a deep hole with a sardine wrapped kwickfish is actually targeting Coho.

Why is the Hump closed for Kings???? Let's get real! The tribe netted something like 40 out of 45 days several years in a row targeting kings. And yes, your bucks and mine run the hatchery.

I hear ya Rich!
I think a lot of this "CNR" stuff going on will only result in getting our rivers closed. The State and Feds will only take so much BS before they just outright close the river.
A lof of this incidental "CNR" goes on with the 'nooks on the Sky and Skagit. I hear the Feds are really close to shutting the Skagit down.
Leave those wrapped Qwickies, 6/0 Gammies, and tennis ball globs of eggs at home!

When are the sportsmen of washington going to figure it out that we have no control over what the Indians do. It is sad that they still net when it is closed to sporties but that is a fact of life. But two wrongs don't make a right. It's the same attitude used by many sporties when it comes to Wild Steelhead. I often here comments like "If I didn't kill it, it would have died in the Indians net". Untill we as sporties realize that we only have control over what we do things are not going to get any better. I remember a day on the sol duc a few years back when a guy got to the takeout *****ing about the lack of fish and the nets at the mouth blocking off the river. One look into his fish box showed two dead nates in the mid teens.

jg I don't agree with your attitude that we have no control over what the Indians do. Maybe on an individual basis you're mostly right. But somebody does have control to enforce the 50-50 split on a river by river. The Hump was a world class King sport fishery and now it's dead. So what do you do bow your head and walk off into the sunset? The Hoh is another good example: We haven't been able to fish Springs and Summer Kings for 2 years now. Guess who is fishing it. No, jg I'll continue to speak out until the "B" decision is fairly administered.

Hohman, The problem I have with our user group(sport fishermen) is that we are quick to blame the tribes for our decline in fish populations. They do need to take part of the responsibility but all I'm saying is we all need to look at ourselves as sporties and take some of the blame, and do our part to help fish populations I.E. not targeting Kings that are closed to fishing.
