ok this is it. I've been learning to fish spinners and I've really gotten to like them. the problem is as we all know they can be kinda costly to buy in the stores. no matter where you buy them. I have loked at a few places on the net and found some great stuff and prices. now I have a pile of blades and bodies and all that.the only thing I need now is the wire and the tool to biuld them. I didn't buy the wires because I didn't know what end I wanted to make up.
so this is the question. I need one of them tools and I don't have a clue of what one to get. I want to make them right (no pliers) and I would like to make alot of them at 1 time. maybe to sell or to give to budies to try. so what is working for you guys or gals that make yers. I can spend some money on a good one if I need to but don't want to if they don't work any better.
what one do I get and where do I find it?
thanx dcrzfitter

Try www.mortac.com, they have differnt tools and gauges of wire for bodies, also everything else you might need. Good luck, fiveweight.

thanx fiveweight. I have been there and done that. they do have some great stuff. I just can't figure out what tool to get. I am kinda leaning on a commercial grade.
what about wire. can I get that in a spool or should I just get the ones that are all cut to lenght for me. do those tools do both ends or just the top ?

I just purchased some leader wire ( barracuda style) for spinner making. It is hard to get the coil memory out of it,which is definitely a detriment to a spinner ( will wobble if they arent straight. I am bendin the wire the old fashioned way ( needle nose pliers). I have seen wire tools for 50.00 and that's a little to much for me. I do suggest to check out Jed Davis's book on steelhead/ salmon spinner fishing. It shows alot of good tricks about spinners (i.e. size, color, building). I think after I use the wire already purchased, I will purchase the pre bent wire from mortac. They use the slide on and bend at the top method, to where there is no rough edge protruding at the bottom. Pliers work, you just have to be patient and get the bends in the right places. Good Luck!

I got a catalog at the following web address:www.hagenfish.com, just go to the site and request a catalog it has tons of things from blades, swivels, hooks and more things. A friend of mine buys a body similar to a ***k Nite and turns each of the body in different ways( the top to the right and the bottom to the left) and it is a KILLER on fish. Good luck

You can also try: makinglures.com. It's the web page for zig-zag lures over near Yakima. They have everything you need to build spinners, including some cool tools and fixtures for turning out spinners. They carry a lot of things I haven't been able to find at mortac and other places. It's worth checking out!

I agree with Steelhead Addict. Buy Jed Davis' book on Steelhead and Salmon fishing with spinners. You will learn a tremendous amount and not be disappointed. I suggest purchasing your spinner wire from Mortac, and all your components for that matter. I've purchased the wire tool that Mortac sells but found it a waste of time and thought that regular old needle-nose pliers worked just as well and just as easy. Have used their spinner parts for several years tying them up all with pliers and have had great results. All I can say is read the book, buy the parts and you'll improve your fishing 10-fold.

I gotta say the book by Jed Davis is a great book. I will also say that is what got me into this mes with spinners. I was just curious and scaned through it one day in Tumwater Sports. and next thing I know I was taking it home to learn more and now I'm catching fish and now I wanna make my own. I have been to Mortac's page I also liked Fishermans Shack. I actually baught my stuff from them better prices and their product look like they are good quality. I will checking out some of these others. Andy Mathews told me about the Zig Zag lures and I will be checking them out soon.
thanx for the help I will let everybody know what I go with.
any other advice about wire and the tools to form it? or just about spinners?
If some of you don't use yer tools anymore then maybe you might wanan get rid of them? let me know I might be intrested.

dcrzfitter:
Spinner parts.......don't forget Netcraft, while not as good as 1-25 yrs. ago, they still have the wire, bodies, blades, etc.
Forget the tool, go to Sears, get a small pair of needle nose, but make sure they are ALL ROUND. Do a great job.....have been making my own and used to sell for 20+ yrs.
I see you're Olympia, I'm in Aberdeen/Central Park.......I could show you how to "make the correct bends", would only take 5-10 minutes. End up with NO, sharp ends......email me if at all interested.

Ryan, see my post farther up the page about ZigZag Lures. They have all the different style bodies (including the blue fox style), blades, everything. You won't be disappointed.

Thanx guys. Yer a BIG help. I got more places to check out now and it sounds like I might just learn to go with pliers.
Ryan- Hey I found them bodies at The Fishermans Shack. they have a catolg and sell for about $70.00 for 50 #5 as the kit. all you need is blades and a hook.
thanx again
