It all boils down to this - I'm right, everyone else is wrong, and anyone who disputes this is clearly a dumbfuck.

Looks like 3,000 more troops are being deployed at the border.
Spoiler alert: The State of the Union address will be lowlighted by the POTUS declaring a "National Emergency to Stop Immigration from $hithole Countries" to fund his "wall." There. Now you don't have to waste your time watching Trump lie tonight. You've got the substance. You're welcome. Any of you ever spend some time down at the US/Mexico border? Around any of the towns (San Diego, Nogales, El Paso) it's an absolute clusterfuk. IMO it is a freakin' national emergency. They catch over 50,000 people a month. Imagine what taxpayers are spending every month just to process and return those people to Mexico, or allow them entry to the US. One party is talking about using electronic surveillance.. great idea, but by the time you see 'em they're already across the border and in the US. Still gotta catch 'em, process..etc. More $$. Put up a wall where needed and they don't cross. We don't have to catch them, and save a boatload of $$ in the process. Calif. is going broke with the number of social services they have to provide. Trump's an idiot, no question, but on this issue I agree.

Trump never got the Ronnie memo below....
But hey. I’m sure at birth abortion, a 70% tax rate and, yay, free everything is a winning platform so his days are numbered.

Thanks for your thoughtful post, GD.
But, when i hear "wall", I think of all the people who go over, around, and especially under such walls. I also understand how the word "wall" appeals to low info trump fans. (Not you, GD).
So the border needs a combo of high tech stuff and low tech fencing.
If it weren't for trump's racist motivations for a wall, a wall would be an easier sell to Americans. Thus, the majority don't want trump's version of a wall.
Are you so much of a snow flake, that you're arguing semantics on what to call it? Let your nuts hang and worry about being a grown Man. Good God. You're probably for abolishing ice. The Vatican has a wall around it.

$0.99 cents and my opinion might buy someone a cup of coffee, but I want a "wall" (all solutions, all of the above + gunny nests and ED-209's). Not racist in the slightest and pretty highly educated (I guess) - sorry to break the Dem view on who some of the "wall" supporters are. It's become just too much on the whole and it's high time we addressed it.
Just last week, they seized enough Fent to kill 25% of our population. Not to mention the 1000's of kids being trafficked and all the other BS. That's about enough.
So, I hope Trump calls it a National Emergency tomorrow night and pulls the trigger.

Just another opinion worth about as much as you're paying for it, so here goes. I think a large part of the resistance to "Trump's" wall is the dipshit way he's gone about it. It was going to stretch continuously from the CA coast on the Pacific to the Texas coast on the Caribbean, be 30' tall - the very best, Mother of all Walls, and most importantly, Mexico is going to pay for it. If instead he approached the subject with, "Look, we should improve and expand the Mexican border walls and fencing at strategic locations, where the existing walls at Nogales, El Paso, and San Diego are't satisfactory . . ." I think he would have gotten complete buy in from Republicans and a lot of Democrats. (Some Democrats would oppose any Trump initiative, just as all Republicans opposed any Obama initiative.) The biggest problems with Trump's pitch is that he back tracked on the funding source. This is enormous, because the coast to coast proposition that he proposed would cost at least $125 billion, and possibly closer to $500 billion, which is a tad more than pocket change, even for the federal budget. The $5.7 billion ask isn't even a respectable down payment; it's just symbolic fodder for the low information Trump base, making it especially easy to oppose.
Now that Trump has showcased his wall as the hallmark of his administration, I doubt he can get any Democratic buy in for even a reasonable proposal, let alone his Mother of all Walls. Trump fvcked himself on this. He owns it.

Like Salmo alluded to, this whole border/immigration could be solved if Congress actually wanted to. To do so would piss off many of their Gerrymandered supporters. So, why actually do something when your job is safer if you don't?
First we had the Tea-Party going far right, then the Bernie's going far left. I really wish the middle would coalesce and leave both ends out in the cold.

Horseshoe Theory The horseshow is getting longer too. Us centrists are screwed. Always have been and always will be. I honestly feel like David Attenborough watching & narrating the acts of two rival monkey tribes while they fling chit at each other.

My favorite part of the speech was when Fatso talked about what a dangerous and crime-ridden burg El Paso was until a wall was built and saved them all from being raped by Mexicans. The crime rate plummteted, and everyone was happy.
Except...El Paso was...
1. Among the safest urban areas in the entire country before the wall went in. 2. The crime rate went up after the wall went in 3. Almost no one there was happy about the wall or the increase in crime rate
Magarglers like Hank and Evo don't care that Trump just straight up lies...all day...not stretches the truth, not plays in the gray areas, but straight up lies to them every day.
Right now 30% of the country believes that El Paso was a hellhole until the wall saved it, and denounces all facts otherwise as fake news.
Welcome to the imbeciles that are the Trumpeteers.
These are the same folks that think we brought Freedom to Iraq, and are about to bring Freedom to Venezuela, too.

I agree with Sg. The bar was set pretty frigging low, but I believe that speech, despite a few, requisite, bold-faced lies, was Trump's finest hour since taking office; not because I loved the substance, but rather because his demeanor was far more stately than we've seen from him to date, and he came off something like a leader.
Of course, the reality is that the few, subtle nods he gave to the incoming class of Representatives will be as close as we will see to non-partisan cooperation over the next two years, but it was still refreshing to see him be mostly gracious in front of a national audience. Despite the feel-good reminders of better times past featured throughout the speech, I don't have a lot of hope that we'll be shoring up the growing division between the parties before our democracy fails entirely. Still, it was just nice to see something above rock bottom.

I like how Magargler cumguzzlers like Hank think polls and CBS are both fake news, unless they back his fantasy-like belief in the angelic sainthood of Trump, in which case they are as good as the Bible.

Shocker...but Trump attracts those with fragile masculinity...that's why they are afraid of women, afraid of minorities, and love hearing how their shittty lives are someone else's fault...while they are bilked out of everything by the very con men who are placating them. https://www.newsweek.com/trump-appeals-men-fragile-masculinity-1236701Fish on...
