Microscopically, the sharpest steel edge is still a saw-blade. Obsidian, and glass, are smooth-edged blades, down to close to the molecular level. Surgical scalpels, made of obsidian, leave next to no scar because they actually cut rather than tear at the microscopic level. Some knappers have custom-made the scalpels for their surgeries with excellent results.

This is correct. Obsidian surgical knives are especially good for endovascular & micro surgeries down to the micron level. They really shine for nerve damage repair. There is nothing on this planet that compares to the sharpness of a modern obsidian scalpel. As expected, they are extremely fragile and beyond expensive.

I watched some videos last year about hand made long bows of yew, which led to videos about arrow making, including obsidian points or broadheads, which was followed by a video regarding their use. Primitive hunters were in no way handicapped with their weapons. They shot deer that bled out in a minute or two.

If one reads Saxton Pope and his books on archery what amazes me is the ranges they shot at. Deer were routinely shot at ranges from 50-100+ yards, with decent results. Of course, they practiced at 100 yards, too. Longbows.

Yep, obsidian is the sharpest of any cutting tool, natural and man made. I would love to have an electron microscope. wink

"Witchery of Archery"..if that don't get ya hooked on archery, nothing will.

Put down the compound bow in 1983, picked up a recurve and been shooting trad ever since. Could never get used to all the mechanical bs that modern compound bows use, and if it's not perfectly tuned your arrows are likely to go anywhere but where you want 'em.

Nothings better than starting on a new stave..wondering what you'll get when it's done. Same for arrows, although I always bought pre-dowled shafts and fletched/crested them myself.

Many, many years back I walked into Northwest Archery to pick up some cedar shafts,; Glenn St. Charles pops his head out of the back room, and calls me back there to give him a hand. We made me a Pacific Yew longbow that day, and it's a treasure I'll be passing down to my grandson. Glenn was the real deal, no doubt.

It was Glenn who sold me my first compound. It was a Glenn St. Charles signature. Absolutely beautiful blonde maple handle. I have a more "modern" mechanical monstrosity that shoots fast and accurate. It's just ugly.

I want to make my own stick bow, arrows, heads, and kill something with it. Even a squirrel.

I know next to nothing about Archery and hunting with a bow. What I find interesting about that video is the lost history of how Archers used to operate. Holding and shooting multiple arrows in rapid fire succession seems completely logical once you see it. Since I don't know anything about archery, I always took "Hollywood's" version of ancient archery as the way it actually was.

One interesting tid bit is when movies say "Fire!". The term "fire" wasn't in the lexicon back in those days and didn't appear until guns were invented. More than likely, they said "loose" or something like that.

Have long appreciated quality tools and craftsmanship. An Emerson folder has earned that appreciation over 2 decades of flawless companionship and service. Ti liners, adjustable ball bearing pivot, multiple ways to open the 154CM business end with one mitt to cut into building materials on a job site or cleanly slice open an envelope. Good enough for NASA and .mil to use them. Maybe you will too.

Not an EDC item unless your Evo, but this axe is superb. Sharper than most knives, holds an edge forever and one could shave with it if they were so inclined. Spendy, but you get what you pay for and with proper care, an heirloom piece.

Yeah, I'm going to wait for Evo to weigh in before I get the coin out. If Evo is bullish on it and AcidAngler could care less then I'm in.

I'm not so sure. I'm really satisfied with my Fiskars axe. It's the sharpest axe I've ever known, and it's wedge-like head makes it a splitting machine. And it's pretty affordable.

My E.D.C., while working in education, was the smallest Swiss Army knife manufactured for retail sale. Only in a Swiss minature museum, might there be a smaller "army" knife than the one I depended on for daily duty. My E.D.C. had all the tools needed to survive in a public school classroom. There was a screwdriver/nail file combo blade, a one inch Valyrian steel knife blade, a plastic toothpick that fit ergonomically into the handle and a tiny pair of scissors. These scissors were so small, that they were exempt from the "running with scissors" rule. The knife looked so innocuous, I was able to walk it past courthouse and cruise ship security by placing it in the plastic tub with coins and keys...no questions asked. Only my students got wide-eyed when I whipped out this military grade multipurpose tool to open a box of Junior Scholastic books, snipped off a wayward beard hair, or zipped open an envelope packed with payola. wink
