In college I worked on a commercial boat for an old portugese captain named Larry Y. out of New Bedford, Mass. This guy was completely paranoid about having bananas on the boat, and also about ever using the word "pig" while at sea. The cook brought some bananas on board once, and Larry actually recruited a black woman to pee in the bildge, which according to him is the only known method of removing the yellow curse.

It almost ruined a weekend of fishing for me and some buddies on Lake Michigan while trolling for Kings this fall. As soon as I found out that my buddy had a banana in the boat, I tossed it in to the lake. Within 5 minutes, we had a take down on our first fish of the day. I'm telling ya guys, it's bad medicine. I'm a coonass with lots of voodoo connections, and bananas mixed with fishin is just plain devil.

I hear this is the remedy for the nanna in the boat... You take the offender in one hand and grease up the nanna real well with WD40...

The rest isn't mentionable, but the nanna packer won't EVER packa nanna on any boat again!

OK, I'll come clean. A squeeler went and posted the banana oil ad on our website to this thread. Geez, I confess; I just wanted everyone else to get comfy with takin nanas out in there boat again so there would be more fish for me . I'm sorry, forgive me. This is a very fishy thread full of wisdom here. I've learned that on occasion when I'm just in that 'have to take some bananas out fishing mood' all I have to do is invite Aunt Jamima over to pee in the bottom of my boat and I'm free and clear to load up a bunch in the sled and head for the river. Cool! I have an alternative remedy though, because a few of you guys may not be good enough friends with a nice black lady that would indulge and pee in your boats for you; and yet you know dam well you want to take a couple bananas in your fishing lunch bag. Right? Right! So here's a little known secret that works for this dilema. Take some vaseline jelly and cover the banana skin real thoroughly to seal in it's scent. This also enables you to do the tough part a little easier; for best results you need to shove the greased bananas up a dog's @$$. You read that right. This double seals and covers the banana scent and rids them of their bad luck properties at the same time. Hawaiian fishermen discovered this technique centuries ago and it's a proven tech. Sounds silly and gross but ya gotta do what ya gotta do!

From what I understand about the reason bananas are bad luck had nothing to do with catching fish.

It has to do with the fact that they rot quicker than other fruits and vegs and spoil them.

This has to do with long voyages.

I fish often with bananas in the boat and have found that they do not cause you bad luck. Bad luck is any thing you want to blame for slow fishing that day. On a trip to the N.F. Lewis with RT this summer, I had a banana in my lunch cooler. I got a s/h and Rt can tell you what he got.

But you have to be happy and confident so...good luck if you are superstitious.

Ya, I got the donut that day . It made Giz's season . But remember that on a drift down the Wilson River in Gary Till's driftboat back in February I hooked 3 and Gary 2 steelhead with a banana sitting right on the rowing seat tray. True story! (The story is on our site archives from a banana debate thread). But don't let that fool you Giz. Those were rare exceptions to the
"Banana Curse" - P.S., let's try that again with a whole banana bunch when the winters are stacked in the Cow or N.F. Walt. That will be definitive!
