I have heard mentioned here using live sand shrimp and prawns, has anyone used boiled shrimp? I have tried it and cuaght steelies on it. Has anyone compared it with prawns or with live shrimp? Any input would be appreciated as I do not fish with bait a lot.

Thanks much.

When you boil the shrimp, most of the natural oils that help a fish find your bait are cooked away. In my opinion it's better to not boil the prawns before you fish.

Why would anyone want to boil prawns?
Out of the cold pack from the store cooler these tasty critters are hardy and colorful. Cooking can and will take away the color and the meat will not hold up as well.
Just use um as ya get um, sometimes it is better to shell them as they tend to fall off in fast water, but meat holds hooks real good.

Both cooked and raw shrimp work. As I see it there are advantages to cooking them. The first is color. Cooking shrimp turns them orange and white, which is more visible than when in its raw state. Another is toughness. Has anyone ever eaten shrimp that has been overcooked? It becomes tough and stringey. Cooked shrimp tails used in conjunction with a large-profile drift bobber probably slams them in high-water.

I've tried using the boiled cocktail shrimp with little success. For better luck try using prawn tails. First, cut them into the size of baits you want. Next, fill a plastic dish with a little rock salt and water. Then add a small amount of Mike's shrimp oil. After mixing the water, rock salt, and shrimp oil place the bait size chunks into the solution and put them in the refrigerator over night. They should be ready to catch a limit in the morning. Also you may want to try placing some Pro-Glo bait dye in the solution for color. This has worked well for me in the past.
