i just read the tribal netting schedule for the peninsula rivers and almost puked.how are the sports fisherman supposed to catch any fish with that kind of schedule.who's in charge of this, and who do you call to complain about this one sided fishing program?the schedule is on the wdfw region6 website http://www.wa.gov/wdfw/reg/region6.htm i was thinking the humptulips schedule was bad until i seen the quileute schedule. I have no clue who to call or how to voice my opinion, but if you find out please let me know.
When are we going to end this segregation/seperation? I was born here as well as my forefathers....they hunted and fished as needed. Where are my rights to hunt and fish is my families "usual and accustomed areas".
I know and understand what our history in the US is, but it is time to make everyone equal. Native Americans, as we are suppossed to call em, have what I call a dual citizenship.
I was born here, am I not a "Native"? They have rights on both sides of the givernmental fence. How can you have a culture/group of people allowed to break state law (under federal regulations) and not allow another group to do the same?
Anyway, I am way off topic and done ranting. And don't get me started on the trapping issue..

The term native refers to people that lived here over 1000 years ago. This includes Norsemen that lived in Vinland. If you can trace your roots back to Leif Erickson then maybe you're a real native. Its time these people get the same fishing opportunities as the other natives.

Send e-mails and letters to the director of WDFW, the Governor, Maria Cantwell.
I sent one to WDFW yesterday, when I find Gov Locke's and Maria Cantwell's address I will send them some e-mail or letters as well.
The Quinaults are netting the Humptulips 6 days a week (Wed-Mon) thru December.
Just like wild fish, if we don't stand up for our allocation of hatchery fish, WDFW will horse trade them away.
WE MUST SPEAK UP NOW!!

When you see these nets srung across the river get some hay bales and throw em in. Thet will put a monkey wrench in those basterds program. The indians are pathetic. They dont eat the fish they just sell the eggs to japan. Anyway you look at it what they are doing and have done is an all out assult on our wild steelhead fishery. Ban all indians!!! Ed

Careful Ed, your ignorance is peaking through. I don't appreciate nor do I agree with the netting schedules, but in all fairness you cannot blame the tribes for exercising there right to fish. I feel that the biggest culprit is special interest groups controlling the spineless WDFG.
Be careful with racial remarks on this board. I practice wild steelhead c&r and don't like the nets any more than you, but I do find coments like yours offensive.

I always thought that the state should determine how much the tribes make netting steelhead. Add 20% to that figure and pay the tribes that amount not to fish at all. Of course allow a ceremonial fishery if needed, but it would be a true ceremonial fishery (No gill nets). The economics’ of sport fishing would take-off and everyone would be happy.

Boycot the casinos and let them know why. If they are in thes things for the income hit them where it hurts. Have some negative advertising against buying indain caught fish. ask resturants if the salmon is farmed or net caught even if you had planned on eating steak. work the entire food chain the $$ will speak.

I'm starting to hear two different messages on this issue. First being the recent outcry for the preservation of wild steelhead, and the promotion of C&R, which I think is a GREAT IDEA, and I've only taken one nate in the last 10 or so years, And secondly, some members on this board and anglers that I've talked to on various Washington rivers, are upset about the Indians netting 5 and 6 days a week during the month of Dec, and Jan. Hears my .02 Indians net heavy early in the season targeting hatchery fish in order to reach their 50% (how fair or unfair this figure may be) thus taking pressure off native runs. what wrong with this? do we want to save our Wild fish?or is price of giving up hatchery runs to high, in my opinion NO. I think this is a very positive step from the tribal fisheries. Ultimately I would like to see if their is some way to create or reallocate money so tribal fisherman could be compensated for not fishing for the commercial sale of all steelhead and wild salmon, or for a reduced catch % My brother and I have been throwing this idea around for years, our fishing partners will contest to this, but people just say it will never work. If any of you have any ideas on this, please post them or E-mail me. As a closing note I'm going to repeat things you have heard before. If we do nothing, the resource will die, and if we do something now it may or may not payoff but we must try. Please lets get together on this, and quit throwing insults back and forth, OK I'm now off my soap box
Hey good luck to all of you this weekend, should be tough fishing all over with rivers low and clear FISHNBRAD

There is no racial remarks here just the no bones hard truth it it hurts im sorry but that is the way it is. Me along with thousands of other sportsfisherman and hunters I might add are fed up as hel with what the indains have done to the fish and game populations in this state. They have butcherd it for as long as I can remember,Salmon, wild steelhead, elk herds by the hundreds and god knows what else. THIS IS SICK and its about time people get real pissed off and srart screaming about it. Enough BS is enough. How long does this freagen crap half to go on before people have had enough. Ill tell you It will go on until we are all fishing for white fish cause there's nothing left. People get mad as hell cause its your resource just as much as the indians or anybody else. Ed

It's seems our destiny. Every once in a while we have to play the blame game. Point the finger, after all it wasn't me who got us in this sorry state. Sure the Humptulips fished 6 days last week. Less then 10 fish were caught. The steelhead were hatchery. But that's boring. We need to find out the facts first. Then report information in a responsible manner, leaving out terms like "ban indians" or "basterds." Who has killed more deer/elk? Tribal or non-tribal. Who has caught more salmon/steelhead? Tribal or non-tribal. Who has logged too close to rivers? Tribal or non-tribal. Who owns the industrial polluters? Tribal or non-tribal. What is the situation with nutrients in the rivers? Will increased nutrients allow the river to support larger escapements? How does ocean survival play a part in run sizes? Find these answers, this will help the resource.

Which tribe allows 8 elk per person? We are allowed 2 elk per household here.

I am an ex commercial fisherman (not by choice),and an avid steelhead fisherman. I've been listening to this argument for over twenty five years now and nothing has changed for the better! It's high time we stopped bickering and pointing fingers, and started doing all we can to work together to save these magnificent fish.We are all to blame in some way, shape or form for the decline of fish populations,if we search for solutions hopfully we can turn it around! Good luck & good fishing

Hey Potter, 10 fish netted in six days last week on the Hump, you have to be on the junk if you expect us to belive that. And about the two Elk per house comment, isn't it true that they can be shot anytime of the year and by any member of the family. So lets say I had Indian rights I could then shoot two Elk for myself, two for all my sisters,A few for my niece, and a coulpe for Grandma, and so on. Any truth to that.

Hey, Sometimes ignorance is bliss, usually its ignorance. Take off the blinders and look at the big picture. The best runs of Steelhead in the state are managed by Tribal entity's on their land. Our "management" can't even provide us with a C&R season this spring. So tie a pink ribbon on that old spruce tree, I won't be allowed to fish there.

Hey guys, instead of starting a verbal assault on Letti and the Indians in general maybe we should realize that`s not where the problem really lies, (it contributes sure, along with alot of other issues) but instead maybe we should be asking them for help on managing our own fisheries, (take a look at the Quinault fishery) it is one of the best in the state if not the nation. Sure there are some Indians who abuse the system set in place but there are also those of us who also abuse the same system just as bad if not worse. Instead of standing here saying it`s your fault, no it`s your fault crap let`s try and improve the fishery we have left. Just my .02 Tony

great point, rainy city.i wasn't putting the blame on the tribe in any way.i have fished the lower quinault several times.it has a impressive fishery to say the least.the reason why is because their hatchery's are putting a lot of fish back into the system.if we could get the state hatchery's to dump the same amount of fish into the rest of the rivers, their would be enough fish for everyone.but most rivers in g.h don't get those amount of plants to handle the current netting schedule.

Greed and ignorance will pay off in a very bad way in the end. Lets face the truth our wild steelhead runs are diminishing at a rapid pace. The no c-r season is a half a-s bandaid to a much larger problem. It looks grim for future sports fisherman. The problem is people are just not unified enough to work together on much of anything anymore. But we the people do have the power. We keep the wash fish and game employed for god sake. Mismanagment is the name of their game. We all need to ban together and figure out the best way to send the wash fish and game a powerful message that WE HAVE HAD ENOUGH!!! Ed
