Coronavirus does pose a threat but not to the degree we are being led to believe. Look how much the numbers and the data have been manipulated and recategorized. It’s even right on the CDC’s own website. Doctors are even coming forward with it. How can you truly have faith in government at this point? They don’t tell the truth and the writing is clearly written on the wall. The problem overall has been sensationalized with the intent to ramp up public fear and is being used as a tool for further overreach and control over people. The media is complicit in this as well. There are several newsworthy topics that are not being discussed right now and given ample air time. Everything is coronavirus. (Although I haven’t watched the news the last 2 days but I doubt things have changed.)

How about the FBI scandal with Michael Flynn?

It's hard to know what to think when Streamer, Bent Metal, fish4brains, and Dan S. are all on a similar and correct path, but the world hasn't totally inverted as Illahee still does not have a clue.

There was a psychological study just done on this exact subject.

They tried to analyze why some people downplayed the virus, and others went along with the recommended stay at home policy.

It came down to government power. Those afraid of the government gaining power, thinking it was just a power grab, downplayed and dismissed the risk.

This by far was the smaller segment, maybe 20%, 65+% agreed that staying home long enough to avoid an uncontrolled outbreak was a better idea.

Facts had no affect on changing the conspiracy theorists minds, because in their group mindset it was all a government power grab.

Both sides agreed the virus was bad, but to very different degrees.

This affected many other decisions, anything that was perceived as potentially giving more power to the government was either called a hoax, or an exaggerated risk.

Again, facts didn't change the mindset.

Since most of this is new (well sort of), there's no way to know exactly how this will play out, only that people will continue to die at varying rates.

I'm at an age where the consequences of being lax are serious, so I'll let some other people test the waters for me.

For me it boils down to assessing level of risk. I don’t go to parties or events and I am cautious and mindful to keep space from others, particularly the elderly. I avoid crowds and shop at the end of the day with as few people around as possible. I conduct myself according to the level of risk present.

If you present me with facts from peer reviewed medical journals I would be inclined to listen with an open mind. A lot of the research isn’t there or doesn’t actually support some of the measures that are in place. Thankfully I have a lot of education in public health so I am familiar to some degree what can be a helpful measure and what is clearly a power grab or fear-mongering. If you consider that downplaying the situation then you can believe that. Perhaps I don’t fit into the two major categories of the discussed study... perhaps the group that tries to look at the situation objectively and conducts themselves accordingly.
