If I had to pick a gun I would choose my Remington 870, extended tube, 20 inch barrel and #9 shot. A drum fed semi auto would be nice.

#9 Shot? Don't you have to penetrate the brain to kill a zombie? With that short barrel, you'd need to have it at point blank, pre spread range to be effective and that's just too dangerous. IMO - You'd be better off with a mid-length field barrel and 00 buck. At least you'd be effective out to 40 yards.

My fun answer would be a Saiga 12 w/ extended mags or 20 rd. drums for heavy mid range work (I know a guy). Also a heavy chopping blade like a weighted sugar cane machete or a nicely balanced Viking style broad sword. Possibly even a Halberd with the pointy stabby bit.

BUT....if all you have to do is penetrate the brain pan, a 10/22 would actually be just about the perfect medicine. Light and pretty quiet; easy to fire for the entire family; can carry tons of rounds and preloaded mags, readily available ammo; minimal muzzle flash, recoil & rise. The lower energy 22lr gets awfully bouncy inside a skull and penetrates way less than say a 5.56.

Also, this question entirely depends on if these are the slow or fast kind of zombies. Slow zombies ala Walking Dead are lame beginner level zombies best used for training weak women and little kids. Fast zombies ala World War Z or 28 Days Later would be a real problem IMO.

I always thought a big John Deere 700 class combine would be a lot of fun too. A drive down main street would probably get a bit messy.

Anyone who thinks they are Dirty Harry and can protect themselves and a home environment with a handgun better than they can with a shotgun probably should just learn how to crochet, and then stab intruders with a crochet needle instead.

My go to weapon for "being on the run" is a Ruger M77 22WMR, scoped with a 2lb trigger job, 40 grn winchester hollow points. Very accurate, factory ammo of most types, 100 yard dime size groups no problem. Easy head shot's at 100 yards offhand. Not too loud, no kick, can carry lots of ammo and will kill anything in north america with a well placed shot within 120 yards.

On a side note most body armor will not stop 22 WMR within 50 yards, in-fact most will not stop 22 lr within 25 yards. 17 HMR is also very dangerous as body armor will not stop it. Too much velocity, too small projectile, only steel plates or ceramic will stop it.

High power riffle will destroy a ceramic plate in one shot but not penetrate. Rimfires are stopped with ceramic plate and do not destroy it in one shot.

Pump shotguns are hard to beat. Just the psychological aspect of pumping the action puts the fear into people.

I do more than half of my deer hunting with my short barreled Remington 870. I never end up using it to make the kill but one of these days. I also want to kill a deer with my Glock 20. Could have a couple times on opening day just driving down the road on small bucks but passed as it was too easy, when you get out of the car walk over to spikes and small 2 points, get within 10 feet and point your pistol at their head and they just stare at you its too easy.

I used to believe that too and I still want to believe it but it's not that simple. A real killer hell bent on killing won't give a chit about the pump action sound and shoot anyway. And might even locate you by the sound. Like I said, not that simple.

I have seen pics of close range shotgun wounds and yes it does major damage. But that's generally within 10 yards or so while the spread is still basically a single lead mass fist size or less. At 20+ yards with most defensive shotgun barrels, that spread is wide enough and weak enough that individual pellets probably won't penetrate zombie skulls. Remember a peppering blast to the face would stop a human, but you gotta hit brain matter to stop a zombie. That's why I'm rolling with 00 buck. The weight and kinetic energy is more than enough to smash zombie skulls. Even bb and t-shot would do it. #9 is a bit light at any normal distance.

Also, who cares about body armor? We are talkin' Zombies here. Unless these zombies have battle helmets on, it's moot. Again, you don't need a .17hmr or .22wmr for zombies. Too zippy. Just a regular old bouncy 22lr that there's trillions of already in the market. Just enough oomph to enter, make scrambled eggs for brains and then stay inside. The scrambled eggs for brains bit is the key here. Again....zombies.

You could save a few bucks on some of the clowns that post here...scrambled egg brains come pre-scrambled, no need to shoot them with tiny grains of sand from 19 inches away.

Not sawed off because no stamp. 22 - 26" inch field barrel w/ improved cylinder. I kill the absolute chit outta' deer out to 60 yards with a full choked 32" barrel and 3.0" magnum copper plated 00 buck. At that distance, (12) .32 cal pellets going 1800 fps end up in a spread of about a little bigger than a basket ball hoop. At 40 yards, the spread is the size of a basketball. So on an so forth until about 10 yards, where it's just a single fist of death.

The trick with the slow type of zombies and shotguns is to wait it out when heads cross into a single field of fire for a multiple one shot kill (if you can, like say day drinking beers from a roof top). At 20 - 40 yards, you can get doubles and maybe even a triple every once in a while. How fun is that?
