Put trailer on truck, drove to Garibaldi. Parked trailer, plugged it into a bunch of stuff.

Tossed crab pots off a pier.

Spent five days doing fuckall except eating seafood and barbecuing, taking some hikes and checking out some beaches, and pulling crab pots a few times a day...and we spent about half our time just sitting in or around the trailer hanging out, depending on the weather.

Drank about five different varieties of the most local beer there, from Pelican Brewing. Meh, 5/10.

Unplugged trailer, put it back on truck, drove back home.

Back to work today.

Oregon crabbing observation #1: minimum size is 5 3/4", and very few cracked 6 inches...and 5 3/4" Dungeness have about half the meat on them that a 6 1/2" crab does.

Oregon crabbing observation #2: everyone on the pier used chicken parts, as did I, only I added in a fresh bluefin tuna collar every day. Of the 20 or so pots on the pier, our 3 harvested about 90% of the keeper Dungeness. Most got zero, some got a few, and we took home six or eight every day.

Oregon crabbing observation #3: caught and tossed back three invasive green crab. Didn't realize you are supposed to keep them, and not throw them back. They were about 4", so they're pretty little...and apparently that's full size for them. I hear they are actually tasty, just not supposed to there. I'll feed'em to the seagulls next time, or something. Looks like a lot of work to shell a little crab like that, for little payoff.

Checked out several RV parks, glad we chose the Old Mill in Garibaldi...definitely the nicest one in Tillamook Bay of the handful we drove by.

Had a transmission rebuild on my truck just before leaving...so much nicer for towing now.

Fish on...

Todd

This is my old stopin grounds.
Word, any shellfish you intend to eat should be harvested from Netarts Bay, no exceptions.
Crabs no problem, but bivalves are filter feeders and Tillamook Bay gets high concentrations of fecal matter on a regular basis, like every rain.
Pearl Point oysters rock.

Definitely checked all the health advisories around before harvesting...but thanks for the heads up on bivalves there...didn't do any digging, but talked about it.

Is there anywhere easily accessible in Netarts for clams? Considered renting a kicker boat there and throwing out the pots, it's only $100 for a boat and kicker for a few hours.

There is shore access, but much of the opportunity requires a boat, but due to the bay being so small, dang near anything that floats works.

Love Tillamook and spent some serious time there the 10 yrs I lived in PDX the late 80's early 90's. Lings, seabass, crab & salmon in the salt; serious hog chinook in the Kilchis, Miami, Wilson, Trask; Elk in the hills; and cheese curds & ice-cream at the cheese factory.

Good times but I never did get any "fuckall" down there... came close at "The Barn" once. The only bar I've been to that had a huge "hunters welcome" banner across the front and AC/DC Hells Bells is what it took to get everyone out on the dance floor.

Wife and I are headed to the Oregon coast for my birthday next month but I'm fairly certain we're not ending up at The Barn but sure hoping I get some "fuckall"

Good luck with the fuckall...highly recommended.

I saw some dudes fishing in boats just off the jetty in Bayview, and some folks tossing little jigs off the jetty...and a few dudes flyfishing off the jetty.

Rockfish, I assume...didn't see anyone catch anything. Any searuns around there?

Everything is mostly closed right now, of course, which was fine since I didn't need any bars or restaurants. The Creamery and the Woodhouse were open, but long lines socially distanced across their parking lots to get in...no thanks.

Fish on...

Water quality counts when harvesting bay clams.
Netarts Bay is one of the cleanest estuaries in the lower 48.

Didn't take much in the way of pics...but here's my cat looking out the window as I am packing to leave. I'm pretending she wants to go, but I am pretty sure she is glad to be left with the house for a bit.

The first place we stopped in Bay City was nice enough...but way too close to 101, road noise all day. We bounce out of there after one day.

This is our spot at the Old Mill in Garibaldi...great move to go there. That grass hill behind the rig is the peninsula between greater Tillamook Bay, and the smaller Miami Bay to the left. 30 second walk to two different beaches from here.

As space opened up in my cooler from removing beers, I filled it up with Dungeness...

Nice.
Why do you use a pop-up shelter when you have a canopy on your trailer ?
Inquiring minds want to know.

Two reasons...well, really only one.

The canopy on the trailer has a broken strut...it doesn't make it "not work", but it is a bit of a struggle to take down.

It was really windy, off and on, over the week...a couple of times I took down the pop up due to the winds, and it only took 30 seconds to do so.

Unfortunately the canopy takes quite a bit more time than that, and until we have a new strut for it, it won't go out in the wind.

Nah, comfort knows no bounds.. I have a 2008 Northwood Nash that I love, sure there's newer but when my jackass hunting buddies wear muddy boots in the trailer or spill [Bleeeeep!], I don't have to whip any ass...

Nice trip Todd's! I especially like the NON-Yeti, & that you didn't need to create a thread asking where to purchase a NON-Yeti to take on your adventure!!

I don't see an over-stuffed knapsack laying around anywhere though...gotta have one of those for your excursions, mang?! wink

Those ORYGUN "keeper" crabs ain't like Wersherington's 6.25" keepers though, eh? I agree, those little buggers just seem like they have half the meat of a real crab..still tasty, just twice as much effort.

Thanks for sharing

I had a white dodge 2500, I think it was a '01. Diesel, manual, etc....was a hauling machine! I have a '14 GMC 1 ton auto right now, I would prefer the dodge

That's an '01 2500 4x4, but it has upgraded springs and shocks that are sturdier than a 3500's stock parts, so I guess it's a 1-ton 2500 wink

My lady's father gave it to me, and it needed some work, especially a $4000 transmission rebuild and a new computer, which was all done a couple of weeks ago. It's got the 5.9L gas motor, and only 177K miles on it, and it is strong and runs well.

The brakes are good, and the tires are also good...but next time I buy tires I will buy new and bigger wheels and tires...jacking that thing up to upgrade all the suspension made it look pretty funny with the stock wheels on it, they look way too small.

I can't wait to deck it all out with a new Biden vinyl wrap, sixteen Biden flags, and a shiny new set of metal balls to hang off the back...the balls represent VP Harris.

Fish on...
