Apparently, you're not alone. All hospitality businesses are struggling to find people to fill vacant jobs. For sure, some of it is due to people (especially single moms) dropping out of the workforce altogether, another part of it is ongoing fear of COVID, and then, you have what must be a lot of people bringing in more money not to work than they have ever made working.

I'm pretty sure the Democrats are extending those benefits to force businesses to pay a higher minimum wage, because they know they won't get a Federal mandate for an increase the old-fashioned way (compromise in Congress, which has apparently gone the way of the dodo bird). Of course, businesses will have no choice but to raise prices to cover the higher labor costs, so it will be consumers who pay the freight in the end. I don't personally have a problem with that (I've always believed goods and services should cost whatever allows their purveyors to enjoy a decent, dignified quality of life), but it would cause me (and presumably some others) to eat out even less often than I do now. With or without me, though, there are plenty of people with plenty of money who still won't think twice, and that should keep restaurants and the like going (I hope).

Paying down the debt would be nice. Funny how we didn't hear a peep from the gop about the national debt during the trump years of wasting our tax dollars.

As long as we allow the US congress to push through omnibus bills with billions for their pet projects the debt will never be paid down.

I know several lazy POS taking advantage of the benefits and being “funemployed”. I can side with a lot of the conservitards and libtards around here for various points, but in this case, I am siding fully with the conservitards. There are lots of people having trouble finding workers. It is ridiculous. Where I work had two good jobs posted and they got ZERO applications. There used to be dozens of applications for these types of jobs.

I think it’s whacky working working world we live in right now with a lot of wannabe lamers. I tell people I get to work from home and they pretty much assume I am not actually working and that it is a sweet deal. I and the other actual workers I work with hate working from home. We have to report on what we were working on for each hour, each week, and bill codes, with kids screaming, and it is a lot harder to do many tasks from home. The lamers always want to believe everyone is lame like then.

Just be happy if you have a pot to piss in... That being said, looks like CNN is even taking a jab...

The maximum unemployment benefit right now is over $800/week. There are $20/hr jobs everywhere here and someone who wants to work could have one within a week of submitting a few applications.

I think (mostly young) people are pretending they are more afraid than they actually are to go back to work, because the media says that's how they should feel. I don't know how many outlets have reported on the "trauma". Maybe it's true, but as an excuse maker, I know one when I see one.

It's likely that not all unemployed people don't want to work, some are waiting to go back to previous jobs or jobs in a similar industry that may not be opened back up yet, and some may not have a job to go back to. However, with the maximum benefit being over $800 per week right now, it is a known fact that there are many people who are content sitting back collecting that unemployment money. There are a lot of decent paying jobs in my area right now and the common denominator is that all are hiring and all are having trouble finding people. I work directly with our company recruiter, so I get a lot of information and insight into what is happening right now.

About unemployment, is that $800 max. the amount from the combined state and federal, or does that include the $300 extra federal? Leave it to Salmo to know diddly about unemployment, even though I've sorta' been unemployed for 5 years now, collecting sociable security tho, not unemployment compensation.

The discussion needs to move from what is paid either through wages or unemployment to what is needed in one's particular community. What is rent, utilities, transportation, food, etc.

One thing which I believe many of us more chronologically gifted folks think of is "connection" costs. When I was a kid, or even when I started working, television was free once the set was purchased, a phone was about $5-10 a month plus long distance, and there was inter-damn-net. That now adds up to, what, $150 a month? It is almost required just to be in contact with folks for even applying for jobs. The upshot is that we could live cheaper a few decades ago.

Rather than complain about minimum wage or unemployment benefits just what does it cost to live in a location?

I fully realize that there are, or were, "part-time" jobs intended for life-at-home students, a spouse picking up some "extra" money, and so on. But I think we need to seriously look at what should be paid to full time employees so that they can live in the community and work one job.
