I feel like politics could be shown like a circle where the lower ends almost touch. On one side would be left wing authoritarians and on the other would be right wingers. The difference between the two become minuscule at the extremes. Both want to control every thing about your life, but come at it initially from different directions. Top of the circle would be libertarian, then head right or left, eventually circling back to the bottom which would be a form of Authoritarianism.

I like the circle analogy. Notice how there is all sorts of screaming against (for example) Sharia Law and Muslim Theocracy but a push by the screamers for the Ten Commandments and a Christian Theocracy?

It's called "horse shoe" theory and it's a real thing. The ends are much closer to each other than they are to the middle. It's an apt representation of modern day America IMO.

The Republican Party in the US isn't some moderate group of consensus seekers, and they aren't a fringe group of right wing radicals...they are *the* right wing radicals.

In the short span of my life most of the Republican Party platform has both been co-opted by the Democrats, and then demonized by right wing whackos as being "far left".

In the grand scheme of things, Republicans are way the fukk out there, and Democrats are just left of center.
