It's almost time!

It will be a chill arrival at camp tomorrow evening, Nap and Skyley and I already have everything set up.

Lots of bucks on our cameras this fall...hopefully a nice one or three will get up to stretch his legs during the day soon!

Who else is getting at it?

Fish on...

Todd

Hopefully everyone had an enjoyable “armed nature hike”. I could only hunt the weekend, and my son could only hunt until noon on Saturday. Luckily my buddy and his 2 sons got the wall tents set up Friday, I showed up about 8pm that night, and my son arrived after his HS football game about 12:30.

We saw lots of deer, but a miscommunication between us let a decent herd of 30-ish with 3 shooters go un-molested. We had a Nice father/son “learning moment” there, I had to point out a few things I thought we’d covered years ago. Anyhow, an hour later I spot a lone buck traveling, and we quickly get set up. I hit the Leica’s and it’s at 404 yards. The kid is set up on my right, (MUCH quicker now after the prior refresher) kneeling, with his new rifle on his tripod. Buck is trotting South, and I whisper, “couple inches of daylight on his back, I’ll squeak n stop him, then let the big dog eat!” It’s a calm morning, and I squeak a kiss sound. The buck stops..just textbook, and immediately the .300 roars, and the buck jumps! The bolt racks, another round down field, (miss), buck is quartering away..I know kid is going to throw quick and I whisper…”Aim small”..he takes 2-3 heart beats, buck is just walking now (sick from first shot), and rifle roars again..and the final meat shot is heard. Boom-flop! 3.5yo 3x4 with nice eye guards. Had it skinned and hanging and kid on his way to a job interview at Mission Ridge by noon. Then Home Coming…can’t keep up with kids today!

Very nice, Snit!

We had a very pleasant couple of days with no deer to break up the serenity of the woods.

Next week.

Fish on...

I guess it doesn't always take all day to make meat out of deer, but it is always delicious and nutritious.

Coming home Sunday night we had the smallest fokie I have seen in a long time in the driveway. When I was a kid in CA, and it was forked-horn minimum, the "rule" was if you could hang a ring on a tine, it was point. In that case, this guy was just barely legal. He also appeared to be looking for the ladies, which seemed kind early but then he was a "young buck"....

Supposed to be rainy in the 509 this weekend. Not my favorite thing to hunt the open country deer in, but any moisture is definitely welcome this year! Thanks much, and maybe the boy will have time to help the old man…but he’s in permanent rut

Ooooooh. Low Blow, but I love it! smile

Island deer have been all nocturnal this year thus far, and results have been poor for our crew. I'm headed out for four days today and hopefully will fill two tags by Sunday.

Must be the moon Phase, right Nick?? F*^CK! grin

It is the moon phase ya' knucklehead. To nocturnal animals, the moon is the sun. Look at the moon this weekend and then look at the previous phases and weekends and then compare to your current results. It's going to be hard for you to post anything further without proving my point. Checkmate. grin

BTW - There is a "New Shooting Instructor for Hire". I expect a certain other poster's sig line to be update posthaste. HAHAHA!

Didn't have much time to get out and about this season. Had one memorable day when an obviously estrous doe paraded 4 different bucks past my stand. She first brought by a determined 1x2. 'Bout half an hour later she came back by with a dink forkie. Then another pass with a bigger, wonky fork. Last, but not least, a respectable black-antlered trey was angling for a taste. Literally. Almost gave her a respite from getting chased about by that testosterone-addled buck.

Almost....

I notched my tag on another old buck this year. This one was sporting poor genetics overall regarding the antler territory, but not lacking in BMI. Was good to cull him prior to the rut, as he already had accumulated 9 does. We figured him for a 6.5+ yo deer. Let a very nice 4.5 yo typical 4x4 continue to do his thing, as his genetics were great. Overall, Lots of mule deer in the Central 509.

Here in the Old area, in neighborhoods, some really nice 3x3 and 4x4 s have been out during the day looking for love. Huge necks, smell a bit, and rather dumb as boards in the sense that a 10 yard shot (if legal) puts meat on the table.

Not Shakespeare.
But rather in the Hemingway style with a side of Jack O'Connor.

He is just trying to class up this place, very tall order for sure. I, for one, appreciate his style of prose.

I wonder if your Governor will try to poison us with mushrooms next...?

Some of our less fortunate are gullible enough to try anything.
