You might start by reading a recently published book by one of the leading authoritys on Pacific Salmon and there present day decline, Salmon Without Rivers by Jim Lichatowich. After you read the book you might want to prioritize the various factors in the decline of the Pacific Salmon and write your paper accordingly. Good luck and I am sure that all the information that Jimm documents in his book will give you enough cross references to write 10 senior papers.

Hi Bryant. I used to commercial fish in the Puget Sound for Herring and in Alaska for all types of fish. I am now against most forms of commercial fishing. If you want you can email me at riverswild@hotmail.com

Bryant if you want publications, pick up a copy of Pacific Fishermen, the Alaska Journal all avaliable here in Seattle @ Sea-Mar or fishermens Terminal. If you need information on any commercial fishing being done in Alaska , Canada, and Russia let me know what you need I can send you in the right direction I think.

Or maybe I can just give you my old copies laying around ... I get one every month. Don't even open them up anymore ... kinda sickening in a way, all the articles seem to talk about how much good the commercials are doing for the fisheries, as if Ma Nature can't do that herself! There's a hint for your paper ... the state and many others believe that we can do better than nature origianlly intended. I think you can see where that has gotten us Good luck on your paper! Bryant - Welcome to the BB.
I agree with Native Son - read 'Salmon Without Rivers' and you'll have a better idea of why we have rivers without salmon.
You've picked a great topic to write about. However, a word of caution on your primary thesis: it may not be entirely accurate. Commerical fishing is certainly a major factor, but the causes for the decline in Pacific salmon are complex, varied, and not always the same from year to year. In some years and in some places, commerical fishing is the primary cause of their decline. But at other times and places, other factors maybe more important.
Hydropower, habitat loss, and inappropriate hatchery practices are also major human contributors. Nonhuman factors also play a part(weather patterns, ocean conditions, etc). Once you start reading about all the factors that influence Pacific salmon abundance, it's easy to see why they're in such tough shape.
My intent is not to make you change your basic premise, rather I'm only pointing some things you should keep in mind. Best of luck.
