Saw the posts regarding the letters to the WDFW on catch and release on the Peninsula rivers, and will be sending some myself over the weekend. I can't help but remember some posts a few weeks back about dead wild steelhead being shipped to the Midwest and East Coast to be sold in fish markets. Well , boys, I am starting to spread the word over here in the Midwest. I am starting to put out bulletins on the "Steelhead Site" fishing reports section to try and educate Midwest Steelheaders about talking to store managers who are selling wild steelhead in their areas. Hopefully we can help you out. Check out the Post on Dead Fish under the New York reports section. Alll of the other states will have a similar post by Feb 18th.
Bottom line is that over a 100 years ago, we got our steelheading started as a direct result of stocking and plants from "Your Native Fish". Seems like that payment should have collected some interest, and it's time for us to hop in and pay off the loan. Sad to think that 100 years later, that we have a greater number of fishing opportunities than you do.
If anyone from the Wild Steelhead Coalition is interested in contacting me as to things I can do to help here, I'll be happy to do it. We could post this information in high profile fly and tackle shops, guide services that procatice catch and release, websites on Midwest Steelhead fishing, bumper stickers, fundraisers through Trout Unlimited Chapters, and anywhere else that could help you guys bend a political ear. What do you think. How about trying to get the Midwest Metalheads invloved in your battle. We ain't real smart, but we fight like hell.
