Is there a major difference between rods used for pulling plugs than drift fishing? It doesn't seem to me that buying a G.Loomis to pull plugs is necessary.Am I wrong? Is a stout rod an aid to a plugs action or is a softer rod tip preferable? What do you "plug pullers",no offense meant, like to use?

The preference would be a rod with a soft tip and a magnum butt section to aid in setting the hook on the take. I use the MBR 941C and I really like that rod and it's reasonably priced for a Loomis.

You know, I have a graphite plug rod by Lami, and have used my friends Loomis', but I prefer using my old Fenwicks. I use either my 89c, 88c, or 85c. They're all fiberglass and are all the old made in the USA. They are stiff in the butt (especially the 89c and 88c since they're mooching rods) but are very sensitive in the tip section. You can really see the plugs working and can tell exactly when the plug is fouled.

Just my thoughts......

Lead/sling, you don't have to spend a ton on your plug-rods. Soft-tip to see the plug working(or if its picked up some junk) & some backbone to set the fish on take-down the loomis 941c is a great rod can go with less $$. But you take your chance's. The Chrome 1

Thanks for the replies. The points on a soft tip makes pretty good sense.I'll see if I can find a Fenwick and compare it to the 941c.I hate to spend a lot of $ on a rod to plug fish, but it is certainly cheaper to spend the dollars the first time rather than end up buying twice to fix a mistake.
Thank You!!!

Another board memeber here, BK, introduced me to the Fenglass plugging rods and I think they're great. I can't remember the model number I've got but you can find them at Outdoor Emporium...

I will have to throw in a thumbs up for the MBR 941's... for around a $100 (TH Rods price) they are a great plug rod...

I have been using the GL3 HS 930's this year, they are very nice. 7'9" 6-15# line weight... ex. fast action... $180...

I only pull tads and wiggle warts.. and both of these rods do a great job.

I use the GL3-HS9000, it is an excellent plug rod for steelhead and coho. 7 1/2 ft., 8-12 line wt. Since buying the loomis rods I have found that St. Croix makes a very close blank to the 9000. For half the price. Good Fishin` Bob H.

Take a look at the newer Certified Pro E-Glass rods from Lamiglas. I bought a set at Sportco last summer, and I think they are the best plug rods I've ever had (including Fenwick and Loomis HSR1021's).
Very smooth on the take-down, easy to read the plug, but with more backbone in the butt-section than most glass rods. Great to look at also.
