They work!! I used to fish them exclusivly for nates in the latter part of the season. Since I started making my own rags I don't use them as much. They fish great with a sandshrimp ridding shotgun. You have to work the water the same as you would any drift-gear, it does take longer to cover the water.

And when a native steelhead hits a aero fly or rag you'll know,he'll smack it with authority majority of the time.

Part of my arsenal for a lot of years ... I still use them under medium flows quite a bit. Some tips if you use bait with them: fish marabous with shrimp, standards with eggs ... egg goo ruins the action of the marabou patterns.

Marabou patterns work extremely well when drifted down into current seams where you almost backbounce them through the seam ... they provide outstanding action when fished this way.

Another trick if the water is exceptionally clear and the fish won't take a standard one is to cut a portion of the foam head off and / or blacken the foam with a magic marker ... my largest steelie ever came on a black marabou fished solo with a blackened head.

Don't catch 'em all

Sounds like the effectiveness is really with the bait not the aerofly. Why not just use a piece of yarn and some bait? Or tie a short body fly on a large hook with a trailer hook, and loop the bait to the trailer hook.
The yarn and bait will proably out fish them all any way.

Actually, in the summertime the only thing I fish is a standard black Aerofly without any bait. Works great in low, clear water and shows them something different. They HAMMER them.

I make my own version of these, and have never found any white backer rod, so I use the dark grey. Under this years' low/clear conditions, red/black marabou with a little crystal flash has been a good producer. I don't fish bait with mine, but it sounds like I might have to give it a try soon.
