...when someone calls my steelhead rods "poles". When I envision a pole, it's either a cane pole (which I own and use occasionally) or one of those day-glo green or orange rod/reel combos that they always sell for $9.99 beginning in April.

It's almost as bad as when I prepare a steelhead for dinner guests and they refer to it as a salmon!

How about when someone says they got a "bite" when lure fishing? Bugs me...

Or calls their minivan a "truck". I drive a '79 F-150 4x4, I know what a truck is, and a minivan ain't it.

Any other irksome misnomers out there?

Hey Todd, Boy don't get me started opps I guess I already took the (bait)! Not crazy about Poles but "Bug Rod" I find even more irksome. And someone named Nate must have pissed me off in a past life because I'm not real fond of that one either. But the top of the list has got to be the "Toad" what the f#$% is that all about.

I hate Nates, too, but what really irks me is the 'Nooch. It's the damn Wynooche! "Y-new-chee," OK? I can deal with Bogey for Bogachiel and poles for rods, but I lived along that other rver for five years and it ain't no stinking 'Nooch. Whew, feels good to get that off my shoulders...

How about when you're watching a bass show and the guy shows you some type of intricate lure and calls it a bait. I'm sure it's the correct lingo but not being a bass guy it just drives me insane!

One thing that realy gets me worked up is when I go out somewhere with my wife and the waiter/waitress/clerk(pick one), refers to us as, "you guys". You know, like, "can I get YOU GUYS anything. Now I'm no Homophobe, (snicker) but only ONE of us is a guy.

Ah, what the hell....I've got 2:

1) Calling hatchery fish "brats". The fact is, they're still a steelhead and have saved me from some otherwise fishless days in otherwise fishless waters. I'm reminded of Bob Arnold's article/chapter "Let's hear it for the hatchery fish!" It sums it up nicely.

2) On those bass (sorry, didn't mean to cuss!) shows, It sounds like they crammed the microphone down the hosts larynx so you can hear every grunt, breath, sniff when they hook and yard in yet another 2-3lb. bass on 30lb. line, all the while yelling "son!" Reminds me of what southern inbreeding must produce.

There has been way to whinning and B#%&'n on
here lately.

Wow, and I thought I was going a little batty this weekend not having any open rivers within a couple hours of the big city. You never really appreciate what you have till it's gone, eh? I spent most my time moving rocks, dirt and grass around the yard. I even put the plunking rod holder out back as "yard art."

Here's my .02 and it kinda goes with another post about manners on the rivers. I get tired of the old blank stare you get so often on our rivers when you say howdy and how's the fishing. I spent a long weekend steelehading up in Canada earlier in the month and was amazed at how friendly the folks were - both the bankies, other boaters and especially the guides. Hell, people would ask about the fishing at the coffee shop/gas station in the morning. After spending this weekend working in the yard I got to thinking how we could all lighten up a little bit on the rivers - fishing beats digging any day.

Yeah, I've got mine, too. Poles are what you string utility wires from, like powerlines and telephone wires. Even my cane rods are that, rods, not poles. When someone says "fishing pole", I am compelled to either correct it or ignore it. I don't even know how many fly rods I own, but there isn't a bug rod in the bunch. I've never caught a "nate" by my own description; not sure about "brats"; and steelies are either a small brass spoon fishing lure or a term recklessly used by the inbred, sub-human life forms associated with Fishing and Hunting News.

As for being anal-retentive Strikezone, consider that language is one of the attributes that separates us from lower life forms. I'm nearly convinced that the language used by some individuals is clear and cogent evidence that they are representatives of a lower life form, or maybe it's just low-lifes. 8^)

A related beef is the current wizardry that makes nouns out of what has long been verbs, adverbs, and adjectives. Language is only a useful communications tool so long as conventions are adhered to. Absent that, humans might just as well grunt and gesture to make their meaning known.
