SZ, call around to food processing businesses in your area; such as smaller meat plants that hunters take their deer and elk to. In those places they have to use FDA approved 'food grade' sodium sulfite and sodium nitrates. The photo supply grades are OK but not quite as good for curing bait. Most often the tackle stores that carry these curing agents will have the less expensive and less productive non food grade versions. Fishermen's Marine Supply in Portland and Oreggon City carry it - call (503)557-3313 to see if they ship it. They do work, but using the best ingredients is one more small factor that adds up to success. While sodium sulfite is present in almost all OTC (over the counter) commercial cures, the nitrates aren't. The one exception is I've heard that Pro-Cure's new 'Wizard' cure has a very small amount of it. I have suggested before to get some nitrates from small meat processors and sprinkle some on a few of your egg clusters and prawns very lightly with it the night before fishing. Some days the 'nooks like your bait a little better with the nitrates and if they do you can sprinkle some on a tray of the other clusters right out on the river. If they aren't in the nitrate mood, most of your eggs don't have it on. 'Nooks (chinooks/kings) are very moody biters so it helps to have cure and scent flexability out there. More later.

Strike, are you from seattle?
If you are, western chemical has it or I can get it for you but the bags are in 50#.
Not sure of the cost but we can get it through work for cheaper.

Strike,

Around here I get the SS from just about any photo developing shop. It of course has to be one that actually develops. You can usually talk them into letting you have a small amount for a few dollars. I then mix the sodium sulf with an equal amount of sugar. Lay the eggs out on paper towel, sprinkle both sides with a good layer. Let them dry until rubbery, turning them over once or twice, about a day for steelhead, longer for chinook. I then put them into a jar with an air-tight lid. Take the air out by lighting a small piece of paper and dropping it into the container before tightening the lid. Store the eggs in the fridge, freezer if they are going to be stored for long periods. I have done my eggs this way for quite some time and they are absolutely incredible. Hope this helps.
