Hi Kevin.
You didn't mention when you are taking this vacation. Whether soon or this summer is a big difference in a combo of family fun and fishing opps. I'll suggest some ideas for both periods. ...
Spring (April/May/early June)- the Oregon coast is a very good place during the mid-to late spring. The guys are correct about excellant parks for your camping. I suggest concentrating on 2 places. Newport and Gold Beach. Just north of Newport a few miles is Ocean Shores RV Park (name still the same?). It's right on the ocean for great views from many slots. And the big activity center has indoor pools, card tables, pool/billiard tables, and other family activities indoors. Newport has both the waterfront shops and museums, etc. and the famous Hatfield Marine Sciences and Aquarium compound across the bay. It's one of the most comprehensive and interesting in the world. There is also RV facilities right near the aquarium. While there you can fish for early summer steelhead up the Siltez River a few miles north. ... Gold Beach is a nice coastal tourist town near the mouth of the famous Rogue River. The family will enjoy the giant jetboat rides up the Rogue for sightseeing and running mild rapids for fun. These are 30' jetboats with dual 454 marine engines. They take about 2 dozen people up any rapids easily. While there in the spring you can fish the bay or up the Rogue River for a predicted excellant spring chinook run (trolling OB for the bay and drifting sections up river). ... I think in the spring that Montana and B.C. (my fav home away from home places) are a bit too cold for family vacations, but doable. ....
For summer time - The above 2 Oregon places will be great for the family with the beach activities added in. And this year there should be longer and hotter silver (coho) off shore seasons on the charters. And you can driftboat the lower Rogue on several runs from Agness to the bay for late springers and early summers. Covering all the many summer opps in B.C. and Montana would take way to long. I will give you a couple suggestions of places closer by. It's hard to beat the combo of ferry rides, scenery, fishing, and family fun up on Vancouver Island. Visit Victoria for as many days as you have time for - it's great! Both off shore and river fishing opps are numerous on the lower island areas; Fishing B.C. magazine and offices of B.C. Tourism will mail you specific fishing info. The same scenario applies to both the big city of Vancouver BC and the alpine tourist town of Whistler, NW of town (1 1/2 hour drive?). ... The tourist and fishing destination of Harrison Hot Springs on the scenic lake (north across the big Frazer River from Chilliwack) is another good combo area! ... As for Montana, it is tough to beat going to the Glacier National Park in the NW area of the state. Great lake fishing in awesome Flathead Lake with trolling OB (some good places to put your camper there too). You can driftboat the N.F. Flathead River on the west side of the park for fly chompin cutts and steelhead sized bull trout. There's a big waterpark for the kids in the town of Columbia Falls (between Flathead Lake and the Park). All of you will be awed by the drive over the "Going to the Sun" hwy. right thru the awesome beauty of the Rocky Mountains. Geez, I sound like a tourism sales rep, eh? Lots of family things to do in both southern BC and NW Montana - and the fishin is just cool!
