I saw this post on the flyshop.com bulletin board. I thought it was kind of intresting.

"Had a conversation with a friend who frequently goes on safari in Africa that I thought others might find interesting. According to my friend there are several outfitters in Africa now that provide what might best be described as catch-and-release hunting for rhinoceros. Evidently the "hunter" darts a rhinoceros with a sedative, and then poses for a photo with the sleeping beast. After the picture, the rhinoceros is brought back to consciousness and sent on its marry way. Purportedly there is some scientific research involved, e.g., blood samples, tagging, etc., but for the most part its simply a way to allow more than one "hunter" to "harvest" the same rhino. All the other elements of the "hunt" are supposedly the same, i.e., the stalk, danger, etc., but the only trophy to show for a successful "hunt" is a photo. As might be imagined, it's not cheap–running into the multiple thousands for a "hunt." "

I have heard tell of similar hunts where they used paintball guns.

I would think that a Rhino would get pixxed after a while and become more aggressive.

Maybe they'll start Work-n-release, where you drive by your office, wave your briefcase in the air, then go home.

Or cnr shopping, where you fill your shopping cart, then leave it in aisle six and go home.

Maybe the next time Ichiro steals second, he should pose for a picture and then go back to first.

Hmmmm,...I'm pretty bored for a Friday night.

Todd.

In those situations where animal populations are low (such as some of the giant african animals) ... I think it's a great idea. Some populations need harvest to keep levels stable but it would allow chase oportunities for those that are not. Different, yep. But definately somethig worth looking at smile

How long until the Rhinos start hanging around the corner, hoping for another shot of that joy juice?
How would you like to be strolling through the African bush and come face to face with a Rhino Jonesing for a fix?
Not a pretty picture, is it? eek
Maybe someone should put some real thought into this! mad
This could set a new standard for shallowness and hypocracy. First the PETA freaks tell us that it's bad to "use" our animal bretheren. All the while they stand there in leather birkenstocks. And now there is "Trophy Hunting" without the comitment of actualy killing the prey.
If the trophy is all they want, they should take a lesson from the Souix by counting coup on their quarry. Now I would pay to see a video of that!! Some .com millionair getting a 2.5 foot Rhino-plasty wink
Ok, I,ve ranted long enough.
