Hey everyone, My buddy and I are going to pack into the upper Queets above the campground in early June. Does anyone know if there is a decent shot at summer-runs at that time? I don't assume any hatchery fish make it up that far, right? Are there native summer-runs? When do they show? Thanks a lot for any info. If you'd rather e-mail me, that's fine. flyfisher1066@hotmail.com

While I never fished the Queets much in the summers before I began coming north, I imagine the timeing is similar to other NW coastal streams ... which means that you'll have some around, but will probably be a tad early for the best summerrun fishing. You'll probably find though, much like the Hoh, you'll get some fish that are true late winters (ocean maturing rather than river maturing) that will be spawing soon.

I am not for certain but I think June is a little early for the summers-runs. But July and August can be gangbusters up in the canyon reaches way above the deadline. The mouth of Tscheatly (sp??) can be awesome. Plus the first cool weather of the fall when the Queets drops back into shape can great as well.

I dont fish the Queets for summers but I do fish its sister to the North quite a bit. Im my expierience Augest & September is the best for wild summers. Before that it could be real spotty. In Augest and September you can pretty much always get one, but you really have to cover a lot of water and fish it hard. And if you miss one that might have been your only chance. They are worth the work some of the most beautifull fish ive ever seen, but I wouldnt count on anything better than fair fishin at best.

Aug-Sept is best for Queets summer-runs and they're all wild up there and must be released. No bait is allowed. There are dollies and cutts up there too and I believe that's all catch and release. It's Tshletshy Creek, about 10 miles in from the end of the road. The ford in June can be impossible, but some guys use rafts and stuff to cross.

Dont even waste your time in the lower river. These fish are going all the way to the head waters and dont start to hold up till they hit the upper reaches. My best advice is to fish as high as you can go. The higher the better. The higher you go the bigger the Dollies will be too. Dont be suprised if you hook into some huge spring/summer kings to. they get a little fiesty when they hit the upper river. Spoons and spinners are the best bet for all species.

Thanks all you guys for the input. I'm getting to excited for the trip and I'll post a report, a necessarily vague one (especially if it's a "steel" mine up there), but something for reciprocity. I hope all you guys have a good time on Friday and all the rest of the summer!
