I have a couple comments about fluorocarbon for leaders:
1) ALWAYS wet your knots before tightening!! The heat/friction makes the line very brittle at knots if you don't.
2) It does not stretch very well. This means those of you who run heavier main line with stiffer rods (and fluorocarbon leaders) and like to horse the big guys in - you will blow out the leader every time... That's why it tends to work better for the fly fisherman and float/jig guys(using longer, more flexible rods).

Also use "Trilene T Knot" for fluro. It is like clinch knot except you loop it twice in the eye. That will keep it hold better and not slip.

Talked to Styxriver about flouro. and these were his thoughts. Never use Vanish. Use heavier test such as 12# or 14#, fish can't see it right?

My thought about flouro is JUNK laugh

As far as mono I like Big Game on my Salmon baitcasting rod. Ande for my Steelhead baitcasting
rods. As far as my spinning I've been using McCoy thanks to a tip I picked up here a few months back. Whoever suggested it I must say thanks. The low memory is unmatched!

FJ...out.

mCcoy is an excellent line. lifted a 4lb salmon 10 ft out of the water at night on a dock with 8lb test, on a spinning rod then with the same rod I bent hooks fishin for chums trying to break them off when they start tanglin other lines. Ben

those are the 2 best points to bring up!! keep those in mind and flourocarbon leaders will work just fine...ive had no trouble with flouro leaders on river fishing salmon this past year, if i did i would probably recheck my knots, thats always the weakest point, not the line itself.

Berkley vanish is junk. If you must uses fluorocarbon leaders seaguar is the only line to uses. It’s as strong and dependable as UG.

Hairball is right on the money........Vanish is junk. Seaguar is a much better flouro, but I still prefer mono.

Maxima,Crystal Ivory sucks.Try Triple fish if you can find it.I think its the best line available.I run anywhere from 6lb. on my salmon rods to 30lb on my sturgeon rods.I personally dont think you'll find a better line.

hntnfish,
Why does crystal ivory suck? it seems like it would have pretty low vis in the water. and its gotta be the same strength as the other maxima

ROCK,

I'm not sure about locally, but you can find Seaguar in Cabelas.

I bought a spool of Vanish 14lb a while back, I was carefull with my knots & all, still didn't have good results... I wouldn't use it again, except maybe fly fishing for trout.

I've heard better things about the Stren Fluoro, my buddy was using 17lb this year on his spey rod for silvers, he said he had to go up to 17lb to get the breaking strength he wanted... if they can't see it, they can't see it, right? So then it just comes down to how well you can handle it... 17lb is still pretty stiff...

MAXIMA CRYSTAL IVORY IS THE SAME AS ULTRA GREEN WITHOUT THE GREEN DYE.THE MAXIMA REP IS A FRIEND OF MY SONS AND HE GAVE US THE INFO ON CRYSTAL IVORY A FEW YEARS BACK. MY FAVORITE LINE IS SUFIX, WHICH IS THE COMPANY THAT MAKES IZOR LINE.POUND PER POUND IT IS STRONGER THAN MAXIMA U.G., HOWEVER U.G IS AWSOME LEADER MATERIAL.

I've been using crystal ivory for mainline since I figured out it was the same as UG. No problems! Still use UG for leader material though. As far as fluorocarbon lines are concerned, I don't like them as I have had some strange line failures, (line sepeating mid-float for no apparent reason) but I do use RIO Fluoroflex as my leader material for trout on the Kenai and have been happy with the results. Knots are tougher to tie fast though. I am interested in finding a hi-vis replacement for my kwikfish rods, any opinions? cool

North, I would go with sufix or izor. Super strong line and you can really horse fish out of timber. It comes in a high vis yellow/green. Its killer line that has not let me down when ya need it most.

The line I ALWAYS use is called Triplefish.... I'm actually rather surprized that I haven't heard it mentioned on this thread yet. I order it out of Offshore anglers, but I dont know of anywhere to buy it locally. It has all the strenth of Maxima UG with the low diameter of Silverthread. It's a mono line, but it is extremely low stretch, just like the new superlines that are out on the market. If you can find it, give it a try, it's really good stuff and I wont run anything else on my rods.
