The Tilton River went to over 8,000 cfs during the big storm this week! If all is normal, in 3 to 4 days the Cowlitz will be mud! look for no more then 6" visability by friday. Lets see if we are right!

Hope this gives you a clue of what it will be like in a couple of days. Hope I am wrong.

Fished the Cow today, The live entertainment was great! Always nice to have a screaming match happening during the slow periods. Hooked 10 to land 3 chromers. Why would anyone bring a green rookie to fish at blue creek?

CFM,
Am I being too optimistic to think the chocolate milk will clear by Sunday? Just trying to figure out what river to float.

I called Fish Country and they said the river wasn't in too bad of shape. A couple feet of visability. In Longview it's not even chocolate soup and that is after the Toutle and all the tribs dumb into it. I think it will fish just fine this weekend. Watch the flows tonight to see if they drop it down a little bit if they do pack your stuff and head on up! Good Luck!

Having never fished the cow before I'm wondering what makes it so difficult/technical to fish. I've heard it multiple times that inexperienced people shouldn't fish the blue creek area and was a little curious as to why and what sort of experience people are referring to.

The fishing isn't technical. The ability to handle a hand gun, or bowie knife is though. eek

rcl187,
The difficult part is the shoulder to shoulder aspect of fishing. A rookie is likely to foul more lines and PO more people than average. I personally can't see the fun in horsing a fish in as quickly as possible to avoid tangling lines nor constantly snagging up with other folks.

Come on now, Zoo Creek isn't that bad! Just bring your Flak Vest, Running Shoes and a big dog. You will do fine.

Why didn't you tell us that you are guiding? Now I understand why you "think" the Cowlitz is so clear!

I have just 2 words to your report!

"Dream on!"

RCL187 what makes Blue Cr unique to all the other "combat" fishing zones is that it is "everyman for himself and to heck with the other guy" at it's finest. It can be utter chaos; one guy's pitching bait and the guy next to him is fly fishing, meanwhile the guy behind him is switching from spoons to a jig and bobber. Another guy would go back to longlining his plug if he could just get his black lab to stop barking and chasing the recycled (approx. 20 times by last count) steelhead as it was being hauled in. And then there's this dad who is trying to catch his kids limits for them by plunking for each of them while all eight are off digging caves in the clay bank behind him (mom's taking a mud bath in one of the bigger wallows). Not to mention the chorus of long lining snaggers who are casting with wicked 8 ft. long leaders. Lest we forget to mention the McCoy and Hatfield scene at the far end of the bank where bankies are heaving 2 oz.s of lead at the boats at the top of the drift and the boaters are backbouncing right down to the bankies feet, both of them cursing each other at the top of their lungs (I think that must be why they call it BLUE Cr.). Oh and by the way, this just describes the night globalling scene, you ought to see it during the day when thinks are really hopping.

Truth is that even at the Russian R. in AK, 10,000 anglers can be found casting the same way and in unison; no problems, lots of fish. Even the snaggers at Hoodsport are good natured and give way to others. Other hatchery scenes like Palmer and elsewhere have a code that everyone seems to respect. Even opening day on any given urban lake can have something of a "coming out party" atmosphere. But not Blue Cr. Why even good ol' Rodney once said, "Can't we all just get along?".

Maybe they ought to consider renaming it to Black Hole Cr.?

Water looked good at Barrier Dam today. Saw 2 old boot summer runs caught and released. As for me, I got the black and white stripe treatment. Didn't see any chromers.
