ThorBuilt is a great fishing boat and I know because I own one. If you're a boondogger the're hard to beat.
That being said, I have to honestly say that the new Alumawelds are as good and even better in some ways.
If I was buying a boat today I would get it from David Lee at Three Rivers Marine in Woodinville. Dave's a straight shooter and a talented fisherman. He'll set you up with what you actually need.
Whatever you decide you can't go wrong by shopping around and this is the time of year to look.
Good Luck!

I talked to Three Rivers two years ago before I bought my Willie. They had one Thor Built in stock then, had it there for a long time and couldn't sell it. Meanwhile they sold Alumawelds at a breakneck pace???? Did'nt see anything wrong with the boat, just not as popular. Take a look at what the guides row and ask yourself why most of them row Willies? They're indestructable.

Darn it I was just up on the lewis last week and a freind of mine (who's # I don't have) was looking to sell his Thor Built. I'll see if I can do some research and call Mike Sexton (owner, builder) and see if he may have the #.

Just becuase people are like sheep doesn't mean the "sheep" are correct. Also I find it hard to belive a Willies aluminum boat is more durable (nothing is indestructible) than an Alumaweld, Thor Built, Wild Hair, Daimondback etc.

Thor Built boats, like all boats, have their advantages and if these are the features you want then...

I own a Thorbuilt 21x7. (That's a full 84" wide bottom)No complaints, great guys, real fishermen. More of a custom shop so you can get one of a kind features and it's a lot of fun watching it built to your specs.. A pretty tough boat, and easy to prove. No specifics mentioned here, but the other manufacturers really dissapointed me. I guess most sled salesmen have some weird disease. eek

Kyle, thanks for passing the facts along to me, i guess I have to trade my boat in on a Willies as they are the best and most indestructible, that must explain the gent I saw on the river last week whose boat ( other than a willies) was coming apart at the seams, poor guy was just standing there looking at it wondering what happened...on second thought....It seems to me you were stating your opinion not a fact (and that was my point.) To be a fact you would need credible evidence to suppport such a thesis. On the rivers I fish I see as many Alumawelds or Lavros as Willlies on some days, does that mean that Lavros are the best boat?

BTW no fishing for me as I have to trade my Ford in this weekend on a Chevy. Chevy has surpassed Ford as the No 1 selling full size truck in America and that must make them the best, so I gotta have one.

Thor Built Boats, the best there is...bar none!
nobody takes as much time and passion into making their crafts, I know quite a few folks that own their boats. both drift, and sleds. nothing comes close. fit/finish is unmatched. great people and great fisherman, Mike Sexton is a long time friend, and great guy. you cant go wrong with Thor Built Boats!

Fuzzy

Silent Approach Jigs they're always there....the trick is to find them!

The biggest difference between the Alumaweld and the others talked about here is the manufacture of the boat. The Alumawelds are great boats, built pretty good but there mass produced and the workmanship isnt as robust as the one at a time hand built boats. They sell massive boats though and are a big enough company to offer guides great deals so there mostly used when guiding from sleds. Take the guide deals away on all boats and I bet a large portion wouldent buy Alumawelds. As far as handling there all different and some work better than others for different applications.
Driftboats: As far as strength there probably all close enough. But its about handling!!!!! Alumaweld D boats should not even be compared to Willies, the new Hyde Aluminum boat, Wild hairs and Fishrites. (never rowed Diamond backs)There sterns drag the water and they handle like tubs compared to Willies and a couple others mentioned above. I know people who love Thor D boats and people who have sold theres. I never met ANYBODY who diddent love there Willie D boat! You do see many Alumawelds and Lavros around Seattle rivers but come to Forks and see how many Alumawelds are used buy guides and locals alike. NONE! Handling matters on the rivers of Forks! And Fiberglass handling isnt even in the same league. There chines are rounded so the dont track well causing the rower to correct all the time. Set a Willie in a line and there it stays! Ive rowed 5 different boats in my 18 years of rowing and NONE handle like my Willie! I know there will be some Alumaweld D boat owners getting ruffled feathers. My observations/opinions are based on the fact that I have rowed both. So if your defending you Aweld D boat and havent rowed a Willie or the like you have abosolutley no water under your sticks to base your rant on!

I have looked high and low on the net for the Thor Built web site. I haven't found it yet. Do they have one?

Cooter, there is no website for Thorbuilt, call 'em in Toledo, they are just off I-5.
I almost bought a Willie, but the salesman in Medford was a complete jerk at Willie, he asked me if I had any money and then he said it didn't matter anyway cause they were sold out for months, ha ha ha.
I took my $$$$ to Thorbuilt where Mike Sexton and Dean made the experience very satisfying and I have a boat that I am proud to own.
I thought the Willie salesman was very unprofessional, it's my favorite "how to turn off customers" story. I keep looking for Willie himself to tell him of my experience.
