I stopped by Cabelas on the way home tonight, and picked up a handful of the old style Wiggle Warts. I don't use plugs very much, and was curious about fine tuning them.

For our applications, I picked up the ones that are a little over an inch long. I got silver with black back, silver with orange back, black with glitter, and silver with chartreuse back. These are the "old style warts". Is there anything that I should know about tuning them?

Was planning on taking off the trebles, leaving the belly treble off, add a split ring to the back ring, and a size 1 or 1/0 siwash. May even do some goofy things with nail polish and prism tape. I have to come up with some freaky invention like RT. LOL

Am I on the right track, or am I the proud recipient of the 2002 Golden Crack Pipe Award? They have a few of the bigger warts left too. Should I be looking at some of those, and if so, any color ideas?

Thanks. Be tender with me, I am a Plug Virgin.

Sounds like you picked up some wee warts. They're great plugs if you get some that swim right. I've found them to be a bit@h to tune. i personally prefer the regular sized wiggle warts but in low clear flows wee warts are good and I like the chrome/black best. I would recommend a swivel off the belly and put the siwash on that. I think you'll find it has less of a negative impact on the action of your plug. Make sure to add a little scent and you should be in business.

Hawk,
Your right on with the colors. Upsize to the regular wart, I would add if they have any left any of the metallic's (green, blue, red, copper or purple), straight orange, orange firetiger, pink, chrome w/blue herringbone, chrome w/red herringbone, and what they call the hot tiger (chartruese/yellow/orange). As for tunig them you need a pair of needle nose pliers, adjust the nose ring by placing the one side of the pliers against the outside of the bill then pull the nose ring slightly to tune it. If they have any of the copper ones I would be interested in buying a couple from you and I'll pay the shipping!!!
Good luck and tight lines, Jeff laugh laugh

Jeff is right on. Except you do have to booger it up with a bunch of paint and tape in order to catch any fish with them thingys. ... Not! smile They are one of the best salmon/steelhead lures to ever come down the pike. (pike - get the hint for trolling all those lakes Hawk?) In tiger stripped or crawfish patterns I'd bet they would take those big toothy critters. Good for big bass too. As for the biggest size Magnum Warts, they may work for the big ones out on Lake Michigan with downriggers. But probably not as good as the Coyote Spoons - right Jeff? wink
