Ok, so this isn't fishing related, but it's geek related. I'm sure there are plenty of geeks out there reading this board.

This is what I did on Sunday. Maybe it's just me, but I find this stuff to be rather cool. Here's 10 easy steps to build your own wireless ethernet network in your house!

All this so that you can post on the fishing boards from the crapper. rolleyes

And your UPS is where? How about your firewall? What firewall, you say? And that $10 power strip is going to do what when the power surge comes in? Distribute it evenly to all items plugged into it, I'm sure. rolleyes rolleyes

Bring it on! laugh

Parker, Do you have a fire extinguisher close by? That would be the first thing I would need to install.

Dave J.is right about the lack of a surge supressor on that power strip. Best spend $20 on a better one and save yourself the cost of replacing everything plugged in to it. You may also check with AT&T to see if they have one built in to the modem. I've been in the electronics business for over 25 years and have see the damage a power surge can cause. wink

Stever:

Exactly. I went over to troubleshoot a non-firing computer this last weekend for a person who said that they were working on the computer and suddenly there was a pop, closely followed by smoke and then computer death. Don't know for sure WHAT caused it, but they just moved into a house in the sticks and had plugged their computer into a crap power strip.

I opened up the power supply and it had a capacitor blown clear off and bits of charred electronics inside. Luckily for them it didn't affect the rest of the system and power supplies are cheap, because it easily could have gone out from the power supply to their hard drive and motherboard, and from there.... eek .

Spend a little money and replace that power strip with something that has some protection to it. $30-40 and you'll save yourself much more in not having to replace a toasted switch, cable modem, whatever else you have plugged in there. If you want pictures of that toasted power supply for motivation I've got it in the car still.

How come the Parketnet isn't running fiber optics? With you going wireless and everything thought you would go all out or did your ol' lady put the smack down on your spending money wink Cool setup though.

ok.. if you're going wire less.. why did you bother pulling all that UTP cable... why not just use wireless for all the puters in the place??

Just curious....

Was all that wiring done by some one with a low-voltage wiring liscense??? laugh

As we all know banki, fiber is good for very long and *straight* distances. High quality copper is just fine for switch to wall operations. Somehow, I just don't think I'll ever need to exceed a Gigabit copper network, let alone fiber.

Only my laptop is wireless, Sniggler. Still have wired desktop(s). in the house. They tend not to move off of the desk...if you know what I mean.

I'm all ears if someone would care to donate a UPS, or good power/surge regulator to Parkernet. Until that time happens, what you see is what I get.

Parker

I'll take the sacrifice and just use the built-in 100MB NIC in my desktop computer.

Well Easy, it was either that, or clean the house. The choice was easy! smile

Parker - I believe I had that same power strip, it heats up near the switch and discolors the plastic over time. The manufacturer evenutally recalled it. It is a serious fire hazard.

You'd have the money to spend on a UPS as well as a nice power supply if you hadn't bought a Mac.

A couple things. He wouldn't need to replace that power strip if it was plugged into a surge protector.

You are running quite a few computers. Is this the enitre setup for a frat house or what? Unless your a big-time gamer (and have friends playing networked bassmaster or something), you don't need to do this.

Cool, do you also have a server machine, or is that just a network acting as a hub?

Fireball!!!!

If my house burns down, I'd get a brand new up to code! New foundation, new plumbing, new grounded 20-Amp wiring, new insulated windows, new 30-year roof, new gas furnace, new gas range, new fridge....

Damn. Burn baby, burn! wink

No, Rip, it's just my house. Haven't had a "QuakeFest" in a long long time. Anyone care to haul over their high-end computers for a little Counterstike?? Oh yeah, it's never about "need". wink

Dude's got a 100Mbit 12-port switch in a home where maybe TWO computers are online at the same time because he's making up for INADEQUACIES in other areas, if you know what I mean.
