I posted this question on web page X and got a big response. What line of work are you in? Its pretty interesting all the different professionals that are on the BB. A lot of people on this BB have much in common. Networking within this "comminity" can be benificial.
BTW: I'm a Sales Manager for a Budweiser Wholesaler in Oregon.

I am an Industrial Maintenance Technician. Jackofalltrades master of one. Unfortunatly I work in the glass industry though. I need one of those high paid, cushy Union jobs so I can afford more gear, like a driftboat.

Small Business Banker, VP. (biggest bank in the US) That means I have a cool title, but no power. Gotta be an SVP for that. I do loans and deposit products for small businesses (under 100 employees and less than $10 million in annual revenues). Thirty percent of my clients are in timber related industries. I get to do loans on cool toys like shovel loggers, feller bunchers, lot's of trucks, charter boats, etc. etc. etc. Got an industry related question? Fire away.

I work in television production. The company I work for produces programming for The Discovery Channel, TLC, HGTV, A&E, PBS, and a couple of syndicated series. I produce/direct a home improvement show for HGTV called "Help Around the House" mainly, but also write, shoot and edit some of the other shows we do as well.

Senior Service Supervisor is my official title, Regional Park Supervisor is my working title and Park Ranger is what most call me. April 16th will be my 29 year anniversary working in parks. The last 17 at 1,200 acre Oxbow Park on the Sandy River. I live, work and play on the Sandy. I am the person responsible for all aspects of the operation and maintenance of the park. Living on site has some disadvantages but it sure is a nice back yard.

i'm a sales engineer for company that designs and installs paint systems for manufactures. Liquid and powder coating systems for companies that build planes, truck or anything that needs a coating like fishing lures and boats. Sometimes it gets in the way of my fishing, but it helps support the habit.

The teacher summed up by saying, "Let me see . . .
You want me to go into that room with all those kids, and fill their every waking moment with a love for learning. Not only that, I'm to instill a sense of pride in their ethnicity, behaviorally modify disruptive behavior, and observe them for signs of abuse, drugs, and T-shirt messages. I am to fight the war on drugs and sexually transmitted diseases, check their backpacks for guns and raise their self-esteem. I'm to teach them patriotism, good citizenship, sportsmanship and fair play, how and where to register to vote, how to balance a checkbook and how to apply for a job, but I am never to ask if they are in this country illegally.
I am to check their heads occasionally for lice, maintain a safe environment, recognize signs of potentially antisocial behavior, offer advice, write letters of recommendation for student employment and scholarships, encourage respect for cultural diversity of others, and oh yeah, teach, always making sure I give the girls in my class fifty percent of my attention.
I'm required by my contract to be working, on my own time, summer and evenings and at my own expense towards additional certification, advance certification and a master's degree, to sponsor the junior class and after school I am to attend committee and faculty meetings and participate in staff development training to maintain my current certification and employment status.
I am to collect data and maintain all records to support and document our building's progress in the selected state mandated program to "assess and upgrade educational excellence in the public schools." I am to be a paragon of virtue larger than life, such that my very presence will awe my students into being obedient and respectful of authority. I am to pledge allegiance to supporting family values, a return to the basics, and my current administration.
I am to incorporate technology into the learning, but monitor all web sites for appropriateness while providing a personal one-on-one relationship with each student. I am to decide who might be potentially dangerous or liable to commit crimes in school or who is possibly being abused and I can be sent to jail for not mentioning these suspicions to those in authority. I am to make sure ALL students pass all mandated testing and all classes, whether or not they attend school on a regular basis or complete any of the work assigned. I am to communicate frequently with each student's parent by letter, phone, newsletter, and grade card.
I'm to do all of this with just a piece of chalk, a computer, a few books, a bulletin board, a 45 minutes or less plan time, and a big smile, on a starting salary that qualifies my family for food stamps in many states.
Is that all?”

Hey Tyler,
HELL NO, I don't work for K2, (as they say, f*ck2) they are one of the ones that moved all their stuff to China. They went from a peak of 600 employees on Vachon to 20 now... no wonder the people there are still pissed as DJ said.
K2 owns Ride and Morrow, they are all made in China. So are most of the Burtons. Salomon's boards are made in Tunesia, there are lots of other boards made in eastern Europe, and then a bunch built in government-subsidized factories in Austria
There are only a few US snowboard manufacturers left, and I work for by far the biggest one, Mervin Manufacturing. We make Lib Tech and Gnu snowboards, snowskateboards, composite street skateboards and Bent Metal snowboard bindings.

Cool post. Interesting to see so many different folks around here.
I'm a technical writer for a large software company. No, not that one. We make the graphics software so many of you pirate. Basically, I write instruction manuals and run a website for developers within the company. In a previous life I wrote for newspapers and a wire service.
I also scam free fishing trips in exchange for magazine stories at every opportunity.
Hey Jerry, I think I've taken a lot of your shop's scraps. Love to see the inside sometime.

Adobe fix? Heh, ask Sparkey about HIS Adobe "fix". Took him days to "fix" the mess leftover from his Adobe adventure. Of course between you and me (and the thousands reading this) it was likely a corruption in IE but I'll rag on Adobe just because they turned the feds on that hacker...er...crusader for the blind Dmitry Sklyarov.
Oh, and sorry dude. I'm chewing Big Red today. The GUM, people. Geez, rough crowd.

Retired at age 39 from my self owned and operated home repair and maintenance business. I moved to Washington in 1986. Spent the next 8 years donating my time to an organization named the "Friends of the Cowlitz" (FOC) Was the FOC business manager and Treasure for over 6 years. I spent the next 4 years as the FOC President. From 1988 to 1999 I was also a full time fishing guide.
For the last 6 years I founded and ran another organization called "Cowlitz Plan for Restoration Fish (CPR-Fish). CPR-Fish is a citizen group that has intervened in the Relicensing of the Tacoma Power Cowlitz River Hydroelectric Project 2016. CPR-Fish also is dedicated to perpetuating sustainable populations of anadromous and resident fish in the entire Cowlitz River Basin. We also work very closely with the FOC.
In yes, it's all done without pay, through my own volunteered time!

I never thought this type of thread was quite appropriate on a fishing BB; but now I think otherwise. Very interesting too. Raises some questions and comments though. [oh no, he must be on the meds again] No. Not for a good while now. ... - Inquiring minds want to know what a Croupier is? - Fishslayer; if you manage a Toyota service department I figure you have plenty of leaders tied up. If it's in a GM dealership, don't fish snaggy water. - Geez Craven, you're a retired giggalo too! Cool job until the bod goes, ay? - BERKLEYBOY, I'M CURIOUS IF YOUR PRINTING CO. EVER DOES ANYTHING IN SMALL CASE LETTERING? - Serious: I'm always proud of our soldiers, teachers (sort of similar jobs these days jk?), firemen/policemen, and hard working guides. I used to be 2 of those - P.E. teacher while coaching basketball and physical arts (don't ask), and a fishing guide. - Hey Skywalker, after I got out of guiding I helped my older brother with his large business of making customized copper core electro-plating racks for many companies making circuit boards and like things (my sister-in-law sold the biz after my bro passed away in a small plane crash last year). We sold to such Co.'s as Beaverton's Techtronix and Dallas' Pragetzer's; I think some to Intel too for awhile. - Hey B-RUN, coming from Idaho I figure your job as a semi-conductor is a lazy one for Am Track? nah, jk - Micron Tech is a good company that the Boise area landed. Hope you are getting their stock in your 401K. And thanks for the 'inside trader' tip about the upcoming takeover.

My wife and I just moved to the Tri-Cities from Spokane a few months ago. I am starting a new job in a couple days for a program created to mentor youth in all aspects of the outdoors. Everything from fly-tying to learning how to set up a wall tent. The great thing about this job is that I get paid to show kids how to have fun in the outdoors; couldn't get much better.

Funny this thread should come up..... My profession is the very thing that has kept me off of this board as well as the rivers for the past month or so. I am a Union Operating Engineer, Local 612. I've been busy as hell lately. 60-70 hour weeks have pretty much insured that I wont even have time to post on this board, let alone go fishing.

I have to admit, I used to have a real job like everyone else. Worked in the tackle shop part time until I had to get a real job. Worked in recieving after school and on Sundays (worked at the tackle shop on Saturdays), in what used to be (they are now bankrupt and out of bussiness) one of the countries largest furniture retailers. After 8 months, got bored with the recieving, no challenge required so I asked if I could try out sales. To my surprise they said "Why not...", eventhough I was a 18 y.o punk kid with hair sticking straight up that varied between bleached blonde and jet black. Long story short, management screwed up royally and everything went downhill. Was very tired of losing my commisions...one night I had a $8000 sale blow up in my face and walked out that night. The next day, I started working at the tackle shop full time.

Railroad carman. I work for the largest railcar owner in North America. I inspect cars for any maintenance they need.Do testing of the air brake systems, change wheels, weld when necessary, and any other repairs needed.Mainly just try to keep them safe and on the tracks. You wouldnt believe how many government agencies regulate these hunks of steel rolling down the tracks.Always somebody looking over your shoulder. I have worked 4-10s for almost 10 years,so it makes for some nice long weekends for my fishing habit.

My paying job is as a lumber inspector for a Weyerhauser owned hardwood mill in Centralia, Wa. I basicaly look at Alder, Ash and Maple boards and decide how much to charge customers for them. My non-paying passion and hopefully future employment is Firefighting. I've been involved in it for ten years years now and am attemting to chase down a full time spot with some local fire districts. Either way I get the bills payed and still have enough left to fish two or three days a week so I figure I'm doing fine.

Oh fine, I'll play too. I'm the Senior Computer Specialist for the University of Washington, College of Ocean & Fishery Sciences, School of Aquatic & Fishery Sciences. I do charity work for Vision Hooks & Tackle. IE, I get to wash Joe and Justin's boat, in exchance, I get to wear a Vision Hat and be called a "Pro Staff" for Vision. Someday, I hope to be able to wash Keith's sled so I can be on the "Ultimate Egg Cure Pro Staff" team and get another hat! In it's hay day, I was the CEO for the Sauk River Steelhead Ranch. Due to the big flood of 2001, the Ranch was swept away and is no more. Now, it's just "Justin's Property" and is being guarded by a pack of rabbid half-breed wolf dogs...and BigFoot.

I'm a small parcel delivery engineer. OK OK, I work for the Big Brown (Ok George Thoroughgood, start singing). Been working At United Parcel Service for 14 years. Have alot of perks to my job, get paid to see (usually) friendly people all ddaay and be able to fish lots of private beaches in Ppierce/Kitsap Counties. I too gave up maan whoring. Couldn't keep up with aal my she johns and satisfy my girlfriend too. LOL Also in proces of staring up my own fly/jig tying busness and custom tackle making. Do it for friends and family noww, figured might as well get the write of to boot.

Retired crabber, (AK, WA, OR). Current student working towards my masters in education at Evergreen. Couldn't think of going after a job that might pay over food stamp wages. Still trying to figure out what I'm missing by not participating in the daily protests, wearing burlap for cloathing, and continuing my capitalist, dominant social status habit of bathing on a regular basis. However, I'm considering growing dreadlocks (O.K., dreadlock. I could only muster enough hair for one matted lock) to conform to the anticonformist theme at Evergreen.

Money does go through my hands! Just ask my X's. Oh, my first is dead. My second one is making up for the first. Out of the two I at least ended up with my drift boat and hunting stuff but thats all. They didn't care for my steelheading.

When not fishing, I can be found making my living as a fisheries habitat biologist for the Umatilla Tribe. I work closely with private landowners who are voluntarily interested in doing some type of riparian/upland habitat restoration/protection on their property. The job is great although like many other jobs these days, way too political.

College! I am busting my tail trying to obtain a engineering degree. I also work a mundane job (bill payer and education motivation)to pay for college and as mentioned the dreaded B word.
I am still looking for someone to pay my bills. All reasonable offers will be considered. Cash accepted. :p

My Parents!!! Ha ha ha, suckers. Oh ya, the car, well... Let's just say that insurance and gas money comes from a boring dead-end summer construction job with minimum wage and terrible hours. I need a good job, so that I can actually afford to feed myself for a month. And if I think I'm poor now, I can't imagine college. Matt

I work for the same "Major Northwest Aerospace Firm" that several others have referred to. I manage flight simulation projects/labs for the military side. Not good times right now, with lots of layoffs. Been there 16 years and never worked for the Commercial side, but if things get bad enough....

Fisherdan, didn't the big 'B' lose out on some huge military bid? To McDonald's? (McDonald Douglas that is ). Or was it Lockheed? Seems I recall it was Lockheed a while ago. Dang em. ... [Edit: to Sockeye below - oops, how could I forget the McD merger?!?] Os, I buy/sell, and rent. All on my wife's money . An ok gig I guess. Currently looking to buy a duplex rental near west side Max lite rail - with the interest rates so low - really low! But look for them to come back up soon. Hope Greenspam and crew waits for a couple more weeks, at least! Geeez, I guess the economy is heating up too much, ay? Here's an idea, with the Dow back up to 10,5 sell quick before the next bomb goes off?

Now I'm a 5th year General Contractor doing Home Repair; plumbing, electrical, misc repairs and specializing in crawlspace rot and bug damage repairs. No employees, so now I can fish whenever I want!

Went to college for Forestry and somehow along the way got hired as a machinist? I had to ask them "what's a machinist?" Now work for a shop making Aerospace parts. Don't work for Boeing, but that's where most of our parts go. Also make alot of Cessna parts too. Not many jobs out there right now, but it seems like manufacturing has really taken a hit. Tyler, If you think school cut's into your fishing time, wait until the real world smacks you around a little. I work 4-5 10hr days on 2nd shift. Don't see wife or kid during the week, so my weekends are devoted to them. When the weather is warm they love to go along, but not this time of year.

The big military contract Boeing lost was the Joint Strike Fighter to Lockheed (Boeing merged with McDonnel Douglas several years ago) last October. That was a lost opportunity of 3-5000 jobs in Puget Sound. Currently Commercial is in the process of laying off 30% (around 30000 jobs I think). Butt pucker times. I console with those of you that have lost your jobs, there are people with 20+ years going out the door.

Vise-president of second tier aerospace machine shop is what pays the bills currently. I fancy myself as a plant manager or operations manager with electroplating experience and manufacturing engineer training. Former owner of a bullet manufacturer in fife.
Also do consulting on ballistics projects for bullet designers around the country. Crew chief on a street stock race car (no pay) and do automotive work out of my garage. Paint, body, engines and performance enhancement. The machine shop has been swamped as of late. We have quoted more work in the last four months than the previous twelve and po's just keep rolling in. One particular non-aerospace project will revolutionize torque transfer and speed control of electric motors. The finest product I've ever seen.
A college course taught me that 90% of the jobs in the private sector are filled before they are advertised because of networking. Now that I know that there are some mechanical folks on the board I have another resource when we need a new employee or two. Or perhaps I will find a new career with one of you folks.

I have been the Finance Manager at an auto dealership for the last several years. Great pay, no free time. Email me if you are looking to buy a new or used car anytime soon.
