Here's the scoop on the bear:

An airman (that's the Air Force), stationed at Elmendorf AFB in Alaska took a shuttle over to Hitchenbrook Island with a buddy to go fishing. They took their rifles because they also both had bear tags, just for safety. While walking to the fishing hole, they see this monster walking towards them, they crouch down, and the guy in the pic gets a good sight picture, hard to miss at the distance of 35 yards, and empties his gun. The bear was measured at 12'6", and estimated over 1600 pounds!

A little more exciting but probably a little less like the truth. Your version sounds a little more true to life. Cracks me up how stories change. What an awesome bear!

Doubletake

I have heard a couple different stories about the bear too, but read it in the armed forces newspaper, The Stars and Stripes about a month ago. I just got the pics in color tonight. I wouldv'e killed that monster too. The Stars and Stripes interviewed the lucky hunter and he didn't say anything about the bear charging him, and also a fish and wildlife officer said the fish was more like 900 pounds, but like a good hunter/fisherman, I have to go with the 1600 pounds, sounds better when you tell others, huh?

For the queesy, or environmentalist nazis that don't like killing of wild animals, talk to the AK dept. of fish and wildlife, not me.

That bear was killed over 4 months ago. were have you all been. Doesnt really matter when he shot it that is a great bear. look at that paw.

I can't even imagine the mess if the bear was a bit stealthier and/or quicker.

Largest I've seen there is about 9'. They don't bother you too much, unless you have fish. They do harass fisherman on the Situk regularly. Also, smear used baby diapers and burning tires scent on your partner. They'll go for him. You see, they like the smell of the dump up there. You'll see what I mean when you visit the wild animal park....
