Where does a person get a hold of some fresh (uncured) whole prawns/shrimp? Would like to be able to pick them up. Ordering them would be OK, but I'd like to be able to inspect my bait before committing to the purchase. Right size, freshness, etc. Anyone?? Thanks, James

I've gotten mine from Johnny's Seafood Market in Tacoma. I was directed there by the people at Sportco, in Fife, who told me Mr. Herzog gets his there. They offer previously cooked frozen whole shrimp.
I've come to wonder, though; does it matter if they are cooked? Would raw be better? If so, I haven't a clue where to find those.

goharley, Well, previously cooked whole prawns could work. However, I prefer to have fresh prawns with the method I use to cure these little buggers. It would make things that much better, but I'll keep it in mind, thanks!! James

James,
Tony's in Oregon City has the cooked prawns $5 a pound (about 50 prawns). That's what I've used in the past for curing, I've had no complaints from the fish so far. As far as uncooked, I'm not sure but Tony's would be the first place I try.

Thanks ramstrong, I'll give em a call come Monday. Uncooked would still be ideal, but if it doesn't pan out, I look into the whole cooked ones. Thanks, James

I would try Asian food stores. I get my octopus and squid there. I have seen whole prawns there. Also try your local supermarket. Just ask the seafood counter to order some in.

Big Jim, Tried the local supermarkets... Tails only is the best I can come up with so far. Still waiting for one to get back to me. Will try the Asian markets, thanks for the tip. James

Just remembered one other spot. If you are military the McChord Commissary has whole frozen uncooked prawns. I had some from there last year. They were on sale at a truckload sale. Like 4 bucks a pound.
