I usually just cut them off and tie on a new one,but have decided to try sharpening. Do you use a file or a stone? Do you sharpen 2 or 3 sides? Are the brands that are chemically sharpened, harder to manually sharpen when they get dull? Thanks..

Older fellow on the Stilly showed me a file he uses. Clips in your pocket like a pen, grooved on two sides, believe Ted's sells them. Take about three strokes on three different sides. File takes off too much material and leaves it rough. I was getting frustrated with long line releases after 5 or 10 seconds. Started sharpening hooks, even new ones, made all the difference in the world.

Should have said "stone he uses!"

I use a file - but as mentioned, be careful not to over do it.

I do it kinda like this: 3 strokes on each of the 2 sides, and one stroke on the inside edge, so you should end up with a triangular point. To check it, lightly touch your thumb nail with the hook point. It should feel 'tacky' (ie stick to the nail with only the slightest effort).

HBP...Why in the world would you want to try to sharpen a hook? confused
Some fish, espically Steelhead, have a pretty tough jaw! Why chance losing a "Self Set" hooked fish because you want to save a couple of cents? frown
If it's dull, TOSS IT!
Don't chance it.
wink
