I just heard from a friend that there was a huge slide at Swift reservoir (Upper Lewis River) over the week end. Has anybody else heard anything about it yet?

Cowlitz,
Yeah you didn't hear the entire power canal wall broke and the power canal is now dry. Sort of freaky, and glad I wasn't there when it happened.. They had coverage of it last night on the news. You won't be getting to Mt. St. Helens through Cougar anymore, the entire road is GONE.. It looks like the toutle when the mountain blew...

Just the power canal to Swift #2 went out. Swift Reservoir and the other two (Merwin and Yale) weren't affected. No injuries and no downstream flooding. Still, the dam at the power canal was around 100 feet high. Dam failures like this are extremely rare. Fortunately.

I haven't heard how Pacific Corps plans on operating Swift #1 since they can't discharge into the power canal (obviously). They will likely have to discharge into the main Lewis River channel, which hasn't seen regular streamflows since the 1950's. Interesting....
