What's up?

Word on the street is.... that the chats were logged.. and that the person logging the chats could even read private messages.. not sure if it's true.. but i dont like the idea...

Guess what FS, every single site you visit keeps "logs" ... it's a fact of life on the internet. Web servers (not people) keep logfiles. My server for www.piscatorialpursuits.com does it, the server that hosts our chat does it. I have access to the logfiles for both ... and for good reason:

The logfiles for the main portion of the site allow me to run a program to analyze the entries so that I can tell which search engine my visitors come from and what search terms they used to find it (just one of many things we keep track of ... I can find out what percentage of browsers are version 4+ to incorporate new stuff, like the upcoming menu navigation). Pretty important info for us ... and for all those millions of webmasters that do the same thing and more.

Access to my logfiles for the chat came with the upgrade we made about two months ago. Is this why we made the upgrade?? Yes and no, our first reason to upgrade was to allow for the upload of custom sounds, smiles, and the elimination of banner ads. Access of these logs (they are kept available to us by password only for 24 hours ... so not just any Joe-Blow can read them)allows us to ban the IP address of a disruptive user while we are online or by following up on complaints within 24 hours.

Not happy with it?? Sorry, but it's not going to change. We barely have enough time on our hands to keep up with everything on the main board, much less what happens in chat ... can't see myself spending a couple of hours reading an entire chat log on a daily basis And when you've got a few adults running around out there that act like sixth-graders, I'm going to keep my ability to keep a sense of order intact.

Hey Bob, keep a smile on your face....I deal with a bunch of young soldiers every day, and I keep thinking; how am I going to deal with this?....just like you have "adult adolescents" on the board. You do a great job of keeping all of us in line especially those of us who
e-mail you with complaints! You know the old adage, " you can please some of the folks all of the time, all of the folks some of the time......but someone always wants to whine" OK, I twisted it Just keep up the good work-thanks-and have a good season up north.

Bob I do not want an argument to break out over this, but I just thought that everyone who uses the chat should be aware of a feature that allows you to log the chats. It's one thing to tell who is going to your site, and what search engines they use, and it's another thing to have the ability to read and keep track of private messages that people write to there friends. Sometimes private messages can contain information that is meant to be private and not shared with a third party. I am guessing you and whoever else who has access to these documents for 24 hours are honest and will not share the information with other people, but unfortunately I do not know if that is the case. You know what I mean?

FYI ... as I mentioned, there will be a log wherever you chat, whethers it's ICQ, AIM, another chat, whatever. If you want a 100% guarantee no one but a friend will ever read your info, better not send ANYTHING on the web ...
