It's nice to think that all of us get to catch all the fish we want to eat...however..sometimes we have to purchase fish items we can't catch or we had poor luck for the company coming fish dinner. Share the yucky experience leaving out the name of the place.
Don't buy when: 1. You walk in the supermarket and you can smell the fish department at the back. Somewhere they have a handling problem. Hubby and I used to go into a store that had the strongest fish smell. Then a while later, they were closed down for a day while they cleaned up their fish department. 2. Another market was selling salmon that absolutely looked like it was covered with cottage cheese. I was vocal. What is that stuff. The poor clerk....well that's the way they come. NOT...that's what they BECOME when not taken care of...like maybe dispose of this DAYS' old fish.

The only thing I do when I glance by the fish department is check the price per pound. I guess there are two kinds of people that shop the fish department...the buyers...and the price checkers. I give fish away sometimes to people who truely enjoy the gift. FJ...out.

I can't get over the size of some of the sockeye I've seen at a particular store up here. They're HUGE!

BigShark has got it right. Vote with your wallet. Also, PoshII, any animal product you buy in a super market may have been dead for a LONG time. I either raise or hunt my own meat, fish, and poultry. I also do all the processing. This way I know where the animal has been. This is the way I was raised and they are skills I do not wish to loose. I know this is impossible if you live on Queen Ann Hill or South West Portland but you can buy from small retail outlets where you can get to know the propriators. It'll cost a bit more but the products are better and you are not dealing with some faceless giant.

Maybe I'm bad, but I buy fresh halibut, (i smell it first), clams and mussels and rock fish when I want stew. I buy albacore in a can (that's the way it comes doesn't it?)
I won't buy salmon, steelhead, trout, kokanee crabs, crawfish or sturgeon at the store or in a restaurant. I just go to the freezer. With the new boat, I'm hoping to go to the freezer for tuna and halibut in the near future too.
However, I know my limitations. I'll buy what I want if I can't catch it. A man's got to eat!

For a splurge: Well worth it and very impressive! Phillips canned crab at Costco which is vaccum packed and kept refrigerated. (in their cold meat section) But if you are lucky enough to have caught your own Dungeness crab, use it, too. This has to be either fresh or vaccum packed crab.
1.Take a whole loaf of French bread. 2.Cut it in half lengthwise..top and bottom half. Put each piece on aluminum foil that can be closed. 3.Take one can of crab which is about one pound and mix it with a dab of mayonaise (about 3-4 T) so that it sticks together. 4.Butter the bread. 5.Sprinkle with garlic powder. 6.Spread Cheezewhiz (yes that's right..cheeze whiz)on top of both pieces. 7.Sprinkle with parsely and paprika for Christmas greenery. 8.Close the foil and bake in hot over at 375 or 400 degrees til hot all the way through.
Slice loaf into pieces.
Our family tradition for a great treat on Christmas Eve with clam chowder and more fresh crab.
