In his 1930's book "The Western Angler", Roderick Haig-Brown wrote that he fished for winter steelhead almost exclusively with a lure called the Devon Minnow. Anyone know what it is/was?

A Devon Minnow is very similar to a plug...looks alot like a Rapala.

I know they were very popular in Britian at the turn of the century for Atlantic Salmon.

Haig-Brown brought them over from Britian and hooked his first ever steelhead on one...triva question: What stream did Roderick Haig-Brown hook his first ever steelhead in (using a Devon Minnow)??

Devon Minnow are hard to come by these days even in Devon. The earlier ones were something like an oversized spin and glow. The bodies were of painted wood. It spun on a central hole with plastic spinning wings and usually was equipt with a small triple hook.
They were fished for trout and sea trout.Later they were made in sinking models of cast metal. Usually they were fished from a centerpin reel since the Brits hated baitcaster reels. " sounds like a model T ford dont you know"

Gregor was correct...it was Deer Creak.

The steelie was preluded by a Dolly Varden that Haig-Brown was sure was not a steelhead as the fight was lacking all the attributes that he had read and heard a steelhead's fight had.
