I'm going down over the Labor day weekend and fish in the crowd. How's the fishing been. Are they still picking up springers? How about the steelheading? Any response is appreciated.
Thanks,

I would be thinking farther down river...a lot farther!

Silver fishing starts to perk in the lower Cow and it's tribs this time of year! wink

FJ...out.

I fish the Barrier Dam almost daily, the last bright summer run I got was 8/11 & have picked a several recycles (dark but OK) since & I saw 1 rather dark steelie get caught 8/22/02, catfish dave said he got 2 bright hens in the am on 8/24/02 but I never saw 'em. I saw 1 "wild" one get thrown back 8/24/02 & other than that, no one got any steel head on 8/24/02. The situation is that there are many DARK SNAGGLED TOOTH springers clogging up the fishery & all day long people are walking these black beauties 1/2 down to the boat launch to save their steel head gear... the concensus is --> outside chance this week end the fall chinook will be here but most likely not productive until 1st week end in Sept.....

I would consider the mouth of the toutle, I was down yesterday and it was producing many large chrome fall run Chinook and some beautifull summer run steelies, best luck with them is after dark, glowballing.
Good Luck

[[/QUOTE] [/DARK SNAGGLED TOOTH springers clogging up the fishery QUOTE]

What does this mean?
As my name states I don't do salmon.
just wondering.

I was at barrier dam in july to watch the kings.
I have never seen so many law breakers in one place at the same time.

People were fishing above the marker even after other fishermen told them they were fishing out of bounds there were also many snagers.

How common is this ?

I think I will stay with what I know.

dark snaggled tooth..clogging up fishery... means when you are drifting your corkies for steel head through the normal steelhead drift lanes but, there are BLACK DEFORMED SPRINGERS in the lanes rather than steelhead, so they either bite them or get caught on them, forcing you to deal with them for 10 or 15 minutes or so trying to save your steelhead gear & line, so the bulk (almost all) of your time is wasted on the springers,

as to the snaggers, you see them up there from time to time & from time to time you see the game wardens write them up & then those people don't come back & a few days later new people come & snag until they get wrote up ... and so on ...

BLACK DEFORMED SPRINGERS
Is that because they have been in the fresh water to long, and are about to die?

Thanks for the info MaxMad

exactly unlike steelhead who return the ocean, salmon die in fresh water, they have elongated snouts, LONG teeth, sore spots on them, canker sores, fins falling off, & meat the consistency of mayo ... if you get the chance, cut one open & check out their stomach, even if they are a little dark, their stomach (a muscle) has the consistency of snot ...

yesterday (8/30/02) afternoon from 1500 hrs until 30 minutes after sunset, zero steelhead caught, many dark springers, & an unconfirmed report 1 bright 15 lb fall chinook (i was a told one was landed but i didn't see it - i was letting some kids reel in a monster springer, when i got back to my spot, the guy next to me told me, but again, i didn't see it & he may have been messing with me but probably not)
