Fellow fish chasers…

Well, this is another Jig question from a fisherman whom has yet to toss a jig…

I remember the great American jig contest last year, and although I read the positives and the success of some of you, I am at a loss as to a few things…

First, do jigs work on most rivers, or are there a select few rivers that one would use a jig in…

Is there more than one way to use a jig?

Any advice is appreciated…

Thank you,

JW

There are a couple different ways to fish jigs

1. Float fish it
2. fish it without a float, cast and twitch cast and jig or drift it.

You can fish jigs in any river, there is jig water in every river.

There are some die hard jig fishers that only fish jigs and they fish them in all conditions. As with any tool I fish jigs in there time in place, (most of the time in low clear conditions or in water you cannot drift during normal flows).

Jigs can be very effective and I have had some of my very best days using jigs. I have found that jigs are a very important part of my arsinal and I wouldnt leave home without them.

Has anyone experience in using jigs while boon-doggin' or sidedrifting? With or without float? If so, did you have to alter the technique at all?

Ive had some success with boondoggin with a float.

Boondoog it like anything else.

We do it through long deep boulder strewn runs.

I will run a jig in any river I fish. I like to fish them when there is more than 18" of visibility. I run my jigs under a Thill turbo master #3 or a dink with an inline slinky to get the float to ride right. Some times I will slide on a pink worm or a bit of bait for something different. Also, a long rod will help to get a drag free drift. I use rods from 10-12 feet, yes, even for drift fishing.

MJ is right on. You really need a long rod and nothing fishes a jig better that the Thill turbomaster #3. It needs no weight other than your jig.

You can fish them without a float, but you will lose pleanty of jigs that way. They are rock magnets.

Color cerise, cerise, cerise. For a change try cerise.

Most important aspect is to have absolutely no drag. That's where the long rod is sooo valuable.
