My good friend who fishes the Thompson a ton, called today to say the latest rage up there is a 11 foot Lamiglas rated for 10-20 pound test line. I don't know the model number. He and several of the region's top rods are using it for tossing spoons. He says it's an awesome spoon rod. He tells me the added length is a huge advantage. My question, is how long is too long? Will they all be using 12 foot rods soon? .

I would use a 12' stick if the river was big enough to warrent it.The ten footers already kill my back I can only imagine what a 12' would do! eek

I like to use my 12' for spoons, floats, anything, including drift fishing in a real pinch. The Lamiglas model number is 110 MHC-T. I have been thinking about this rod more and more. I tend to like a 10-20# rod for spoons, especially for late nates. Maybe one of these day Lami will come out with a 8-17 or a 10-20# in 12 to 13' length. I can hope can't I. beer

I have a 12 footer I use all the time for jig fishing, I also have a 3 piece 15 footer I use most of the summer. That's as long as I'll ever go.

All this talk about 'too long' or 'too short' depends on type of fishing, size of river, and your personal preference. Long rods are great of line control and casting distance, but they're too clumsy in tight spaces and for transporting. So the only answer is to own 50 rods and carry several to custom match your fishing conditions. Anohter alternative is to get one of those telescopic rods that extend out to 12'.

For those of you who just want an answer, I'll choose a 10' , 8-15 lb fast action rod for a compromise.
