Thanks eddie. Your polarization is not suprising nor is it a problem in my opinion. Agreeing to disagree is at least a civil manner of behaviour. I know most of your posts here and there are usually civil or full of imbedded barbed hooks. lol. Hooking up is usually more fun than landing a lunker.

I'm not exactly positive on the name of the Applegate report. I was a teenager the last time I read it. It is about 150 pages that sort of provided a snapshot of the people of the central Oregon region in the mid 1800's. For some reason I thought it was a commisioned report, in my family it has always been known as the Applegate Report, and it was evidence that the people warred with each other, the settlers and the traders to a point, but also that the natives were pretty much westrernized by the French trappers, the English explorers as well as Hudson's Bay people and the Spanish explorer's. They were already dressed in victorian garb and educated in the Bible by the time that the Applegates arrived. This isn't really what the government wanted to be heard as they were attempting to justify the action of taking over the willamette valley for western settlers to farm.

Ok, I think the 'report' is the diary of sorts written by an immigrant. He talks of many things, and the report is available via the History of the Great Basin area and tribes.
I, probably mistakenly, thought the largest barrier to the Willamette Valley was the Nez Perce. Not that they were warlike but that being friendlies they were not quite so easy to rape.
'Not quite so easy' is a relative term. There were, thanks to our various Federal and local agencies, many ways to acquire what the tribes had that the whites wanted. The term 'Treaty' should be a curse word of the worst connotation.
Here is a link I perused. You probably know of it, but in case you don't.
