I have six words for you.

West Point West Point West Point!!!

Glo hoochie and glo green dodger produces really well.

We have had limits that last three weekends fishing right off the bouy headed south. Some of the deepest water in the sound is just southwest of West point, and we fish the ridge around the dropoff...water from 130-200ft deep, then it gets really deep.

I dont know what it is guys, but this place has been hot this year for us.

Sky guy, what boat are guys in. I've been fishing within eye sight the three weekends also and might have seen you out there. As for the fishing we have also put our limits in the boat each trip. Bait and spoons. Been finding the fish suspended at times so work the water column. I will be heading out again on sun.

Hey Fishslayer,
We have been out in my buddy Geoff's boat, a 22ft or so Bayliner Trophy with big gray penn electrics on the back. I think we might be out Sunday again too, thumbs so If you are there say hi. The fishing is too good to pass up right now.
This season has been awesome, we are usually out at daybreak and in by 10:00. laugh

You are right about suspended fish, we have marked and caught several of our keepers at 100-120 in 150 ft of water. Have to have that finder dialed in.

We need to put together a small derby right there in the bay sometime. Give everyone a chance to meet. I'm thinking I'll be out sunday myself also. I'm running a blue/wht 20ft searay w/ blue top and 3 scottys.

Well, we have until the end of February to get it together?

What do you all think?

A BM derby fishing West point up to Jeff Head, or some other boundary ...then meet for beers and cheers by Shilshole afterwards?

What other ideas might there be?

Been fishing in Eagle Harbor since mid-December, the area has been so consistent this year that I have rarely ventured beyond the harbor all winter. For some reason, the fish that enter these shallow harbors often seem to be larger than average. Last Friday AM we had a 30" fish, and last Sunday we had limits by 8:30, including a 31-1/2" fish that weighed in at 13.5 pounds, my personal best BM. Hot setup seems to be a #3 Hotspot and glow green Coyote with Smelly Jelly, put the balls right in the mud and troll slow.

I'll post a picture if anyone can tell me how!

Eagle Harbor huh, thats not too far from where we have been fishing. May have to give tha a shot sometime.

---------------------------------------------------------

As Far as a Derby goes, I would like to do that, like Erndog says, closer to the end of the month so we can get a few people on-board.

I think if we had boundarys from Alki point to Jeff-head that would be a good area to fish. That way the E.Bayers could join in. I know of a few local bars that may get behind us and maybe even sponsor the derby.

For those of you who are in the know, how could we get Ted's or 3Rivers or another shop to throw In some tackle or other gear for prizes???

I think the only way we could get a showing would be to offer prizes for best fish, etc. ...otherwise it may just be a few rugged, die-hard BM fishermen like me and My buddy cool

Looks Like Feb. 23rd would be the day, rain or shine, wind or flat calm.

What do you all think? If there is enough interest I will make some calls. If anyone else wants to help set it up let me know.

Is this going to be a Derby or Flotilla of sorts.....or does it really matter. Other stores that might have interest in some involvement are Outdoor Emporium and Salmon Bay Tackle. If this is something that is going to happen, I'd be there and have one other person as well.

It could be the first BM Derby/Flotilla for the PP members.

If there is enough interest I will start a new topic and we can go from there.

I think it would be great to meet alot of you I chat with here over a few beers.

Another plus is that this would be more centrally localized, so people from down south or up north, or on the OP could make it.

Make sure to use the word flotilla... A derby requires a permit from the DFW...

Sounds like fun.... maybe sometime this Summer we can have another big flotilla in the South Sound and party at Penrose SP. Hell we could even do it at my place! Whatever, we can summon up, I'll be sure to get involved to help out!

Eagle Harbor is at Bainbridge Island where the ferry comes in at Winslow. Watch the channel when you fish. And about dragging your ball inside the Harbor proper. Not a good idea. Anyone ever heard about the Wycoff Superfund Enviromental Site. This has area has been identified as one of the most toxic environmental sites in the US and it is certainly the most polluted place in the Puget Sound. This small harbor has been stewed in the juices of the Wycoff Creosote plant for many many years. For the last 10 years or so they have been quietly working to cap the floor of the harbor and I believe they have completed all they can do to this point. Everybody is hoping that this will solve a nasty problem. I grew up 6 houses from the ferry dock and all the bottomfish I caught there for my parents as a kid went into the garden even back then. The salmon migrate in and out though and should be fine, but I would advise against dragging the mud in Eagle Harbor. I'm not trying to unnecessarily alarm anyone but I just thought you should know.

Putting the balls in the mud was a figure of speech, just fish within a couple of feet of the bottom.

Limits for 2 in about 30 minutes yesterday eve, so still a few around.

Chip,

Good on ya mate. I'm relieved to hear you're keeping your feet outta that crap.

Also congrats on discovering one of the great secret winter BM spots. Small harbors around the sound are some of the most overlooked places people don't fish in the winter. And Eagle Harbor is just one of many. Most guys will blast out of these harbors and head for the deeper shelves first thing and have no idea how many really good fish they've passed over. Another overlooked place are the mouths of the rivers around these parts. In fairly shallow water (20-40') around the docks near the mouths of the rivers I have consistently taken some of my biggest winter BM. In the mornings I'll try flipping bait or BBs like you'd fish for bass. Kind of the urban version of fishing the kelp beds for kings. If you decide to try this, leave the light tackle at home though. Most of these spots are morning haunts and only hold up as long as the bait is there and the light isn't too bright. But they are all worth checking out before heading for the depths. wink
