Any recent reports of jigging success? I'm headed to Westport tomorrow and will give it a go.

I always heard that herring need to be starved in tanks for 2 weeks minimum to be firm?

But I will try the ice&salt in the bucket method.

AH, Yes!

The mere human angler verses the power and speed of the mighty herring! Who will win the heart-pounding battle?

Do the tides matter when jigging for herring in the Westport boat basin?

And should I bring my crab ring?

Tried it tonight - no herring at all frown

Usually I do the best on the afternoon low tide - and I would expect herring to be in the marina on days when there is a high tide after dark, because that's when they spawn. This week the tides aren't real good but I thought I'd try in anyway, next week the tides should be better. Whether there will be fish or not is anybodies guess. rolleyes

Went down friday on a hot tip from a secret source.......thanks. Three of us caught about 11 nice herring and 20 three inchers in two hours. Good news is it won't take me long to process them. Don't bother going yet.......

Jigged a little off float 20 at Wesport on Saturday & Sunday. Very few herring. The few I did hook were nice purple lable size.

There were quite a few smelt. I didn't know Westport had smelt?

I'm working out in Westport on Wednesday and I'll give it a try then. If my theory holds, that's the first high tide after full dark during a rainy weather period, so they should be in rolleyes

Surf smelt spawn in the summer just south of the Grays Harbor south jetty, and that's probably what those are - immature surf smelt. Caught enough for a meal for 2 myself the last time I was out - melt in your mouth - sure beat river smelt - those ol' spawnouts are good for nothing but sturgeon bait :p

Was out in Westport today anyway so I fished for a couple hours in the 60 mph wind and driving rain - perfect herring spawning weather. Caught 4 herring. Don't think it's going to happen this year if it doesn't happen this week. frown
