I was at a outdoor sports show a couple weeks ago, just wandering around looking at stuff. You know the deal, theres the hot tub guys over by the vinal siding dudes, cell phone scabs and ginsu knife lady. A few outfitters from B.C and some boats.. nothing good. So I come across a boat dealer thats got a bunch of scotty 1050's for 45 bucks each. So total on impulse I buy two of them. Telling myself I will try for some Macks and Kamiloops this year. Are these things any good?? Also, I suppose you need different rods for this type of fishing. Any idea whats a good down rigger set up ?? Never done it before.. pretty much a steelhead guy, but do have a large jet boat that is needs more things to do so thought, why not.

My suggestion for you is to order and read The art of trolling by ken schultz, trolling top to bottom by mark romanack, kokanee the complete guide by david biser. all these boat have the basice and plus the more advance stuff. also good reading but a little dated is successful downrigger fishing by fred olson. other then that post on the site that you have a open seat in your boat for anyone who is willing to teach you to down rig. other then that go fish.

45 bucks, thats a hell of a deal, most places I've seen them are right around a $100, as for rods, I don't know what to specifically recommend for Kamloops/Macks fishing, but I would definitely leave the graphite at home and go with fiberglass, graphite won't hold up to the stress a downrigger will put on it.

Sweet deal. The Dick Pool book on downrigger fishing is a quick read and should get you started. I'd think they would come in very hand for some of those deep running lake trout.
