Plunker (aka DeathWish),
Plunking at night is one thing, running the Double Rapids in the dark is another. I’ll leave the later to the experts. One thing about "Gusty's expert friend" though is that you probably won’t hear him recommending to StlhdH20 or anyone else to "go for it" either, at least not without showing them the way or checking them out first. It’s a good thing that StlhdH20 doesn’t seem like the type to jump off a cliff just because you tell him to.
Life is a precious gift. It is not just a piece of "gear" to be lost in the "snags" of the world. I personally don't see anything noble about dying while running a river unless it was attempting to feed ones family, rescue a fallen comrade or guide someone safely home. Live to fish and love another day. Life is meant to be shared and not just enjoyed at any cost.
Regarding the cost, perhaps we would do well to reread the old post about the fisherman who lost a friends son when their boat went over the diversion dam on the Nooch. Then, ask ourselves if we would have told him to "go for it, cause you and your friends' son only live once and if you don't take the chance you might as well be dead".

Plunker, I don't mean to be harsh, but my hope is that you never feel, as I am sure that fathers' friend now does, that you or a friend wish they had "passed" on that one "chance" to do something chancey. I, like too many others, have other sad stories to tell but I know I can't say it better than Gary said it in his "End of the line" post. I think of you and the others on this board as fishing brothers of mine, and like Gary felt about his brother, I’d like to keep you and the others around as long as God’s willing. Have fun and enjoy life, but be safe and watch your buddy’s six.
