One way to find screaming deals on ebay is to run the search engine with every combination of misspelling and funky names you can think of, A lot of the time folks will misspell simple words, or put things in the wrong catagory.
For example if you want to find downriggers search for winch, winches, outrigger, *rigger, down* etc. Use the wild card any way you can and learn to use the advanced search to exclude keywords for items that have no relationship to what you are looking for. We buy a lot of stuff on ebay, and always ,always, always pay with a credit card that has a buyer protection plan on it and pay thru ebay or paypal or some other reputable service. If you mail off a money order you have little or no recourse if the sh1t hits the fan. And remember if you pay with a service NO ONE will ever email you and ask for your card #, We get these now and then and we forward them straight to ebay, Its like catalog shopping on the phone, If someone called you out of the blue and wanted your card # you would not give it to them, but if you called them to make an order its a little different. Other than that you have the general idea.
BTW the ones I got were listed as cannon digitrol fishing winches, I found them by running a search for can* digitr*
use your imagination, it takes some time but can be worth it.
As far as canon vs scotty, look at the ads on all the websites, everybody is being paid by scotty, and some guys will flat out lie about other brands, look around for what you want, and what has the features you would like and as long as its a major brand I think you will be fine. Penn, scotty, canon adn there are a couple others, I think most of the guides I know of ( and thats not really very many) use canon, with a few penns. One the other side of the coin scotty is very popular so parts and accessories are easy to find... And Downriggin will probably have more good info for ya than I could ever comeup with
Good luck
