Those are the real "KINGS" before the selection of smaller fish by harvest and hatcheries. Can you imagine: those fishermen thought that the runs were indestructable, sorry to say "NOT" <img border="0" alt="[Goldfish]" title="" src="graemlins/goldfish.gif" />

Crabin Fev,
That photo is also in Lichatowich's fine book, Salmon Without Rivers.
This is a photo of a Puget Sound cannery at its finest....sadly, most of these fish were either canned rotten or chucked...you can only can so much fish in a day before they all start to rot.
Where was this photo taken? Could be any river in CA, OR, WA, or BC. By 1890 ANY western coastal stream large enough to support a cannery had one in operation, mining natures wealth.
Spark, you wanna know why Columbia Chinook are an Endangered Species?...it's not from catch & release mortality I can assure you. The number of canneries peaked on the Columbia at a whoppin' 39 in 1887, and then they began a slow, steady decline because they had wiped them out.....there were no more fish to harvest. This happened on nearly every majory river system in the NW, not just the Columbia.
The really sad thing is that these canneries migrated from the East Coast, where they had already brought the Atlantic Salmon to near extinction. They knew damn well that salmon were NOT an inexhaustible resource and were more than aware of the consequences of overharvest and habitat destruction.....and nobody stopped them.
When you look at the run sizes of salmon before and after the canneries were done raping, pillaging, and plundering it's a miracle they survived at all....

This is my contribution to this thread... These coho were caught motor mooching off the Oil Docks and the Trees in the fall of '91. I was all of 10 years old at the time and this is the oldest fish picture I have of myself. Note: The hat I am wearing in that photo is surely a collectors item...if only I could find it. It is an orginal 'Long Live the Kings' hate given to me by my grandmother who was (along with her husband...my step-grandfather)intrumental in introducing me to fishing!

Here ya go leadthrower.... These old photos are of my grandfather, who unfortunately passed away before I became a steelheader. Have quite a collection of Ray, Cherry, and Hoh bobbers though. Not sure where the Kings came from, but I would guess the Sky. The steelhead came from up in your neck of the woods leadthrower, the Elwell drift on the Sky. Ike

Nice photos
Would have liked to do battle with that Steelhead
It amazes me to see how little gear they carried back in the day compared to what we have now. Granted he may have been at home already and geared down but you know what I am saying, fishing was more simple back then, or so it seems.

I'm too young for any black and whites But we can go back over a quarter century for this one ... a Clackamas River springer: And while not a fishing pic, it's an outdoor pic that I found around the house (one of these days, I'll raid Mom & Dad's for some more ). Bob, the Great White Rattlesnake Hunter ... not sure when this was taken, but again, over 25 years ago Yikes, I'm getting old!

I think I wore that Darth Vader T-shirt about 4 days a week for bit. Those might be some of those Britannica jeans though Best of all though are those Bauer Tennis Shoes ... always thought they were the coolest because they were the same brand as my hockey skates! Always been stylin'
