I'm going to be spending some time on Kodiak Island this summer, living in town, and of course I want to fish as much as possible. My dilemma: I won't have a car. I thought I might just rent one, yeah right. Island prices. I may be able to splurge and get one for a day here and there but other than that . . .what are my chances of getting into some salmon and dollies by hiking or biking from town?

The Buskin River runs right past the airport. I have had excellent sucess there on coho and pinks. You didn't say when you will be there, but there is an early run of sockeye in the Buskin. The coho aren't there in good numbers until late summer, early fall, but there is almost always something to fish in the Buskin.

I'm sure you will have a blast.

I will be there for most of June and the first couple weeks of July. I imagine I'll hit the sockeye peak and maybe the beginnings of the coho/chum run. Anyone fish off the beaches near town?

Thanks for the info on the Buskin. It makes me hopefull.

The Buskin is a good bet, full of dollies. There are at least 5 rivers on the road system, so you should have lots of opportunity. Don't forget to explore Old Woman Bay (and the others) for fresh pinks and silvers in the salt. I used to do very well with a #9 fly rod. You can also bike to the west, to Larson Bay: more fine opportunity for both salmon and rockfish.
Kodiak is a dream come true: fishing, hiking, getting clams, etc. Do it!
