I called ballard bait to find out what hours they are open. I am headed to canada for a week in port hardy and want to stock up on some bait. I was talking to them and asking prices per pack, per case and so on. He suggested buying seconds. Apperently from his description they are packages that some one messed up on when they put the fish in them. At $2.00 bucks a dozen sounds like a good deal. Have any of you used these or seen them before. What quality are they. Should I take a chance on these herring.

Ballard bait has got some pretty good stuff, that's for sure! I've been using their herring for as long as I can remember.

I'd ask the guy that's selling the cases for specifics and see if the reason they are cheaper is because they mixed up sizes or something similar. If so, then that's a good deal. If they screwed up when flash freezing them or vac packing them, then they may not turn out right. Otherwise, give it a shot and you'll be out on the water for the early bite when you don't have to wait in line at the bait shop in the wee hours of the mornin'.

I second Kid Sauk's comments...The quality of product will be the same, you just may have some product where the fish are lumped in the package, diff sizes. I'ts all good once you dethaw and fish with them!

I bought my usual case from them this year and once again it is near perfect bait.
