being the gear nut i am...i want to change the wrap colours on my big honkin' spring rod...currently there are about 12 or 14 guides and each one is nicely wrapped (rod built 4 yrs ago) with bright yellow wrap and matching paint...but what i want now is the rod to be even more distinct...and crazy lookin'...so i want to make a rainbow of colours on alternate guides...like yellow....blue....orange...red...pink...green....?...but i figure i do not want to duplicate the colours more then twice...so 7 individual colours at least...

my question...HOW DO I DO IT??

I have no idea how to start...and the guy in the fishing store said he would do it for $5 a guide...or about $80 with taxes and all...

I figure i have to somehow remove the existing laquer/glue? on the wraps...then unwrap?...then re-wrap (can i use any thread..like some stuff in a dress supply store?)...then paint (same question...can i use hobby store paint)...the reglue/laquer 9is it a separate glue AND laquer...or a single product?)

any other info greatly appreciated...

regards

b

You might just want to pay the $80 and have it done. You'll probably spend $40 for the gear to re-wrap the guides. Then you'll have $40 worth of hassle to do the work yourself.

When you build rods, you really should use the products made for rod building. Theres a system to building rods, and using some craft store thread and some funky epoxy, won't get you the results you're looking for.

at least when your truck gets broken into, that will be the only rod left untuched.

Give Angler's Work Shop a call and they'll hook you up.
Here are my recommendations if you really like your rod:
1. Replace the old guides with the best that you can afford. Fuji SICs are great.
2. Choose your threads carefully. Remember to confirm that your choice of color will not fade or change color when react with the Epoxy.
3. Carefully shave off the old epoxy with a razor blade or razor knive and remove the old wrapping.
4. You don't need no stinkin motor to wrap the guides, just have one of the guys from the shop demonstrate a knot for you. Its very simple. Because this is a remodification, you will need to provide extra wraps so that it will pass the original marking. This way you will conceal the original work. No one can tell that you had F-up on the first attemt.
5. Do not apply the epoxy until you are totally satified with the position of the whole sets of guides. Eye ball them over and over again. I also recommend you run fishing line through them to see the total picture.
6. You don't need a roller. But it helps alot if you have one. Since you are working with a single rod, just apply epoxy to one guide at a time and turn it by hand. You will need to continuously and slowly rotate the wet epoxy for about 10 minutes. Then just turn it 45 degrees every 15 minutes. And after 2 hours you can stand the rod straight up to dry for 24 hours.
7. Remember never use epoxy on the tip top.

Good Luck and
Have Fun.

And don't even think about reworking your reel seat and handle, it is a pain in the rear.
